He has just told me that the hospital are not giving him a wheelchair to use, I have a manual 1 here that I take to my parents when we visit there each week I am trying to think of a way he can use this and I can still get to in my parents, my electric 1 wont go in their house. Can anyone shed a little glimmer of light how I could get it down to his so he can at least get about a bit.

surely a disbandened shopping trolley will do! ;-)

Julian,

Are you starting a collection, I'm sure we get get to £70 in a few days ;)

I'm not sure if it applies in the case of two broken ankles but there is usually a good reason in rehabilitation for not using chairs and crutches. I had a lot of major surgery on my knees and they made me get walking as soon as i could bear the pain without crutches. It keeps the muscles from wasting away too much and helps prevent picking up bad posture habits. I'd check with physio first if a chair is the best thing.

The main good reason is lack of wheel chairs due to lack of money. At £70 it is easier to just pick one up from fleabay BUT I might be able to get one for FREE tomorrow but how much would it cost to get it from Preston to Lynton.....

I know they do but when they rebuilt my leg I still had the chair given me by the hospital

I am sure between us we can get enough to ship it down to Norfolk

As long as it's under 25kg it shouldn't be too expensive...

I'll see what I can find tomorrow...... Can't promise anything though yet.....

also needs to be around a 22 inch seat and 25 inch at widest points which is arm rest to arm rest outer sides

go to asda and borrow one of the electric ones, basket on the front will provide lots of space to carry his photography kit.

If I was Lynton I would kick up a right fuss at the Hospital. I had a problem where I tore the ligaments in my ankle quite seriously and I had a ' back slad ' pot put on ( open at front to allow for swelling and designed to keep your foot up at 90 degrees so you don't get foot droop '.
I did it at Manby airfield (quite a few years ago now) whilst setting up for a rally where I stepped off a trailer into a pot hole.
When the pot was fitted, the comment was DO NOT put any weight on the pot as it's not structural. We can't give you crutches as you are from outside the area and we won't get them back !!!! so you'll have to hop and go to your local hospital to get some !!

And there I was thinking we had a national health service not a regional one !! Grrrrr.

It still riles me to think of it now so stick up for yourself and demand one or someone to carry you. You pay your taxes !!!!

Grumble over !:):)

4 months after tearing ligaments, tendons in my ankle and chipping some cartilage i'm still not happy the NHS turned me away saying nothing wrong and no crutches because nothings wrong, walk on it and it'll be fine....2 weeks till i have ankle re-construction surgery privately, because of an 8 month wait on nhs :bang::bang::bang:

If I was Lynton I would kick up a...

That would be the problem. He can't kick up nothin'. ;)

I agree though, if the physio folks say it's not a problem for him to be using one, he should get the hospital to give him the use of one.

Surely if you have two broken ankles you must be entitled to a wheelchair? I appreciate about getting patients moving as quickly as possible but come on!

Lynton said his wife was going to try the red cross. i just didn't want him having to hang about waiting.

thanks for what you guys have done so far - i'll step in and clear up a few issues......./ questions...

normally can get one through the red cross - they dont have any appropriate ones at the moment...... no self propelled ones, just the 4 little wheeled ones...

as for physio etc, it is essential i do have a chair as both ankles have been reloacted and fractures pinned, I cannot put any weight on ankles for 6-8 weeks............. crutches therefore is not an option (at first) - if i had one working leg crutches would be fine......

NHS (in norfolk) anyway have the policy of using red cross for discharge patients as not feasible for them to have so many "in stock" so to speak.

Thanks for all of you who have kindly offered to help, it's the logistics that are proving the nightmare ...... there are a couple of more local things to try.......

Hold on the whipround for now though............

Thanks though Julian, for such a kind offer of lending me your chair (can I have the pimped one though?????????:lol::lol: complete with goodies!!)

Will update you all when I find out whats happened locally tonight......

Ive been ringing round parcel firms this morning to send my nhs manual chair down, but most seem to need you to have an account with them.

I use a courier company local to me a lot APC, I just drop the item in at their depot and it costs me about £10 to ship stuff anywhere. OK I usually only ship small boxes but as long as its well wrapped thay are pretty good on priceing.

It angers me when people clearly need help and cant get it, then you get the toss pots who say they cant walk and get everything and then filmed playing football or golf or running marathons. I will keep trying to sort this out for you today and wait till you see if anything can be done locally.

I left a message for my social worker this morning and she just called back and said ring your local councils (NCC in your case) adult services department and explain to a duty social worker that you are going to need short term help. Get the ball rolling mate.

Hi Lynton

Very sorry that you have had such bad luck, I never knew slides could be so dangerous, and I hope you get well as soon as possable.

However I have a question are your ankles in casts? If so there could be a very good reason for not getting a wheel chair, the hemo dynamics of getting the blood back form you legs is not simple. As your legs have been damaged by the break and the subsequent surgery then there will be swelling, the swelling is depandant on many factors and has to be controlled.

I imagine you will being advised to get bed rest at the moment and advised to keep your injury above the level of your heart so that the blood can flow back through your veins and not worsen the swelling,

if your legs are in casts and the wound swells it can constrict the blood flow closing off the veins first, you would loose the feeling in your legs and you may not notice,

Hence why a wheel chair could cause a problem as the blood would be pooling at the bottom of your legs,

Sorry if you know all of this, all I’m saying is make sure the consultant says you can use a wheel chair.

If a courier is needed, ring www.uknextday.co.uk on 08456 430053 and ask for David.....

David knows about Lyntons accident (infact, along with me and a couple of others he carried Lyntons stretcher in to the RAF chopper!) and if you mention that Damien said to ring, then you won't need an account as it can be sent to my address and I'll pick up the bill

I know Lynton has a couple of things to try first though, so I think it's best if we wait for him to decide if he needs a chair sending before we book the courier.....

I think it's awesome that yet again, TP members are coming together to help a fellow tog.....I love this place!!
