This is from quite a few years back using a 500D and 70-300mm @ 300mm

Cool, very cool take… but a tad over worked
as the artifacts are showing!

what should I be looking for?

I think over sharpening is responsible for the
too strong micro contrast and the greyish over
tone is due to an unset DRL. Finally, I see there
seems to be some brush work that could have
been executed with a tad more precision.

I would like very much to see an untouched version
of your birdie.

I would, very subjectively, not go further than
these tweaks… again, a lovely take!

thanks, I see what you mean - I tend to try and bring out the detail in the bird using tonemapping which does look overdone now that I see it

with a shot like that

the composition is too central and bird too much to right - bird needs moving to left with more space to right

large branch will be reduced and then what is left can be cloned out

or even a 1 x 1 - to eliminate the branch and set a better composition

it's a good shot

The thing not to forget, IMO, is that some birds have
feathers designed for camouflage and other for the
show. Since this birdie is often on the ground, it is
in the visual nature of the feathers not to be distinc-
tive… a peacock or a faisan are more flashy for ex.
