Beginner Herring Gull

The better idea, when thinking of DoF is to consider
a blend of the following…

— aperture close to the sweet spot of the lens. Though my long
lens are capable of ƒ2.8 to ƒ4, I systematically shoot wildlife @
ƒ8… just me!

— to be able to chose say ƒ8 and still have a decently fast curtain,
adjust ISO consequently. On my D800E, ISO 800 is the better choice
as higher generates image degradation.

I recently bought the D810 but I haven't had the chance to explore
the given extended ISO performance yet.

Your exif says

ƒ/7.1 close enough to ƒ8

SS 1/400, this is quite too long but this bird was going nowhere

ISO 320 this is where you have some playroom! Test your results
at higher ISO and choose one that will both

— permit higher SS
— present little or no image degradation.
In the case of this post, your rendition is superb but the chosen crop is not. :)

Like it Gordon, but would like to have seen more of it, though appreciate that as it was taken from a boat you might not have much of an ooportunity for a shot.

Dave

BTW from the colour of the wings I'd say it is a lesser blackbacked gull.

My discomfort, Gordon, comes from the eye
"bang" in the middle of the frame!

Would it be possible to see an uncropped
shot?

the first shot is straight from the camera no pp or cropping

No PP? Wow!
