Ive just bought one of these and no matter what i put exposure up to the images still turn out really dark .
I focus in manual then put filter on and still same thing really doing my head in now any advice or help would be really appreciated.

Probably a stupid question - How "long" (in minutes/seconds) are the exposures you are taking?
 
Can you either upload a sample photo (even though it's dark) or at least give us an indication of the settings used - shutter speed, aperture and ISO?

I suspect your shutter speed is not long enough. If you're in manual mode (not talking focus here), it sounds like you're setting the exposure for the camera without the filter, then attaching the filter without adjusting the camera settings accordingly.
 
It's been a while since I did this but I measured the exposure needed in Manual, without the filter in place, from the camera's exposure meter. Focus the image. Fit the filter. Then in manual calculate 10 stops slower shutter speed which usually take you into the "bulb" setting. Use a cable release and count off the required seconds/minutes and take a look at the result. Adjust timing from there.

You need to dial in an exposure time to compensate for the 10 stop.

eg;- 1/250th, f8,100ISO = 4seconds, f8,100ISO, this is only a rough guide, not all 10 stops are the same

Iso is usually 200 or lower

Cheers john will try that ( i usually use bulb mode for traffic trails )

To help you, you can get apps (both paid and free - although a free one will do the job) which will tell you roughly how long you need to keep the shutter open for. I've got one from the Apple Store called 'Long Exposure Calculator', and it does the job.
 
There is a free App for calculating your exposure for iphone I'm guessing it would also be available for android it even gives you a count down timer and alarm at the end of the exposure time :)
 
OK so you're in manual mode- no exposure compensation, f18 (say). If your exposure without the filter is 0.5 second what are you aiming for with the 10 stop in place for the exposure time?

Mark, it doesn't matter what your settings were, they obviously under-exposed the shot.

Take a shot at the correct exposure without filter , AF turned on.

Turn AF off, add filter, add 10 stops by working out what the exposure should be, this below

take another shot, if it needs it , correct exposure by +/- in thirds of a stop :)

It wouldn't matter, exposure compensation doesn't effect your settings in manual mode :)

512 seconds or 8 minutes 53 roughly :D
