How can I stop...

Constantly looking for a new lens to buy!?

I have only owned my 40D for a month, along with 18-55 and 55-250, and all I am thinking about is upgrading my kit, buying new lenses, yada yada.

You probably all know the score, but how can I make sure that I have used what I already have to its full potential before I look at making another purchase?

Thanks.

Stop buying the magazines and get out and do something more interesting - like pressing the little button on top of the camera more often.

I have exactly the same kit, and keep wondering how much better my photos would be if I spent £xxx or £xxxx on L-glass - and then look at the photos in my library and think "probably not enough to justify working 6-12 months to save up for the hardware!"

Don't spend time reading forums. You know that's where all the gear lust comes from.

If you want to use gear to its potential, then get out there and shoot. Sounds sarcastic, but it isn't, honest.

I know I shout be out in the field more.

At the moment, 4 months off Uni and being stuck in the house all day isn't helping at all in terms of browsing the forums.

We all look at stuff and wish we had it, but it's best to rationalise it and work out what you really need. The kit is tools for the job so use all this free time before uni to take pictures of whatever you like taking pictures of, then review them and work out what you could do to make them better. Many improvements can be had with settings adjustment etc but you may get to a point where you need a bit of kit to improve, it's then that you research it and get what you need.

Alternatively blow your student loan on all the top-end kit :D

Do a search on Flickr for images taken with your combo and you will be surprised at the quality. I still use my 40D for certain situations and it can be better than my 5Dmk2, if you are going to upgrade then ebay or here is your friend, just make sure you buy quality lenses that hold there price and make selling on easier.

In stead of doing the easy option and believing that all the best kit will make you a better 'tog'. Understand that 'practice makes perfect', turn the computer off and get out side and take some pictures. Post pics on the web, get help in how to 'enjoy being a tog', its not 'what you have got, its how you use it'.

All it appears you are at the moment, is a 'photo equipment junkie' . . . no, not nasty, the truth . . . get out on the street, in the park, up the alleys and press that shutter, dont worry about settings, use auto, understand and enjoy what your eye sees, the techie stuff will come later
