Yes
My Sigma 1.4 50mm is front focussing and with my 7d i was able to microadjust for perfect focus but on my new 5dMk2 even at 20 it's still out somewhat, so I want to get it calibrated.

Can some let me know what I need to do, and will it cost me?

Thanks

you will need to send camera and lens... always found sigma uk to be very helpful and responsive :)

Depends if it is still in warranty and if Sigma agree its out with normal parameters.

I just emailed them, I'm not interested in sending my camera to them as well!!! Surely they have some 5dMK2s they can test it on.

I only just got my camera today, I'm hugging it like it is a baby!

If they won't calibrate without the camera I'll be sending the lens back to amazon as faulty I think!

I am focusing on a persons eyes but am finding in the image their ears are the sharpest point in the picture. Is my lens faulty.
This is a phenomenon with digital SLRs. If the image sensor is fractionally out of alignment, even by microns, the point of focus will not fall exactly on the sensor. The first thing to do is get the focus flange distance and AF sensitivity of your camera checked by the camera manufacturer. Getting this flange distance corrected normally solves the problem however if the problem persists, we will need your camera and lens sent in so we can set the lens to your camera. If your camera is not reset first we may be setting your lens to a camera that is not to specification, which would mean your lens will not focus accurately with any other camera. Depending on the focal length and maximum aperture of the lens, the focus problem issues can be more apparent with some lenses than others.

If its only a week or two old,and you are sure your cameras are OK (don't rule out badly caliberated AF systems..Canon have "history" here) then I'd return it for a refund.

No it has to be calibrated to your camera.. well thats what they told me on the 1dmkII and a sigma lens..

well on checking with every other lens I have - all canons they are all spot on so I know for sure it is the sigma

Do you have any other f/1.4 lenses?

An f/2.8 might not show a body issue - much less DoF on f/1.4 than f/2.8 or f/4.

Remember when you auto focus, the lens is wide open. Important point to remember.

I have a 1.8 and that couldn't be more spot on if it tried, the 1.4 is miles off, better with a 20 microadjustment but still a good 1cm or so out

In that case as its just a week or so old, I wouldn't bother with sending stuff back for repair.

The last 3 out of 4 Sigma lenses I've had in the last 3 mouths have been shockers with clear optical defects - I just got refunded on them.

Ironically my 50mm f/1.4 is the only one out of a 70-200 f/2.8 HSM, 100-300 f/4 and 24-70 f/2.8 HSM that have been any good. The zooms all stunk  - 75% of mine were fauilty out of the box.

just requested a replacement from amazon, they'll pick it up on monday - if the replacement is also faulty I'll consider sending the new one away fro calibration with the camera (shudder!)

Oh and by the way Sigma replied and said I just need to send the lens, not the lens with the camera.

Gits..I wonder if mine was same job.. they made me send lens and camera.... camera came back within a few days but they had to send calibration info to japan who then sent a chip to sigma who then sent lens back... they insisted on both. hmm a few yrs ago.. maybe they do it differently now?

WOW! The Sigma fairy must really not like you! :D

Got my new one today and it is spot on without even needing to microadjust!

Im a happy bunny!

My strike rate lately is dire for faulty Sigma lenses. I just get refunds now.

Ironically I think about 80% of my brand new purchases have been faulty.

If I buy second hand then I've never had a bad one!

Both of my 50mm f/1.4 I bought used (one from here (Nikon) and one from AVF (Sony)

Makes sense, assuming you buy off someone who has looked after it. It's unlikely that anyone will have the 50mm 1.4 as their first lens, so by then people will know what they are looking for, so a higher percentage will get fixed.

(You'd think, at least)

Consistently? Have you used it in different lighting conditions etc.? As I said in the other thread, mine works in tests but in real-life conditions will fail to focus correctly quite regularly.

i mean i have only tried it for today but all the tests it passed then took lost of photos of my wifes eye at 1.4 to great effect as well as one of her belly button thats pushing up from the small child growing underneath!!

That still looks a little bit off to me - assuming you were aiming for the top of her belly (and congrats...), it is the bubbles to the right that seem to be perfectly focused, which is a bit deeper.

take a look here and you'll see it is spot on, I pointed a very crude arrow to show the bubbles that are in focus - the band of focussed areas is so tiny at 1.4 but you'll see that these bubbles are on the same plane as the tip of her belly button

Fair enough, if that is where you were aiming. I just assumed you were aiming a bit closer, but if not then that is all good.

Might have to give it a go. It's unlikely they'd make it worse after all! Keep us updated if you do find any problems post-service...

oh just to clarify, i didn't send it off in the end, i sent it back to amazon and then got a replacement, the replacement is spot on, so can't comment on how good the servicing is!

Ah, right. Well, same difference - shout if you have any more problems. I've pinged an email off to the servicing people anyway to enquire about whether they think it is fixable (and how much for). I got it second-hand, so that's the only option.

It's annoying as it is perfectly sharp when manually focused, so I'd be a little loathed to switch it anyway. We'll see what they say.

mine being a grey import lens, i don't have the luxury of sigma warranty support.... the amazon market place seller has now gone quiet after i mentioned the sale of goods act.

i just want my money back now so i can get it elsewhere.

at least there is the amazon a to z guarantee + i used my credit card, but still. :bang:
