I took my first RAW images today and i understand that i need some sort of program like adobe lightroom to view them?

is there a free program out there up to the job?

i have photshop cs but i havent been able to view the raw files through it when i have tried.

Cheers for any advice :help:

If you have photoshop cs have a look for the updates on Adobe.com, they update the RAw drivers occasionall. Not sure if they will support back to the original cs version though

There'a a plugin available so you can view raw files as thumbnails in windoze, and even open them in windows photo gallery.

GIMP also has a raw plugin avaialable for it allowing you to edit them, but if you update photoshop you should have no problems.

If you got the D40 new you should have a disc with viewNX, if not download it from nikon its free but basic.

I just installed viewNX of the cd. thanks for that, now i can view what i have taken doesnt look too good lol but im hoping the editing will save it.

Does anyone know how i can now get these images into photoshop? is it still a case of updating photoshop?

nef files are raw fles and have to be processed - they contain a lot more information than camera jpegs

It looks as if the earliest version of Adobe Camera Raw that supports the D40 is 3.7 which is only supported by Photoshop CS2.
You can download the Adobe dng converter to convert the .nefs to .dng which will be supported by Photoshop CS, and maintain the advantages of raw.
Alternatively, Picasa 3 and Irfanview will allow you to edit .nefs from the D40, and are free.

Just downloaded picasa 3 which seems pretty good, thanks for eveyones help

And Gimp.

There's no value in shooting raw and then just viewing them, the whole point is for you to use the extra information contained in raw files to edit.
If you just want to view pics, you might as well shoot jpg

i just wanted to view them so that i could rate which ones were worth editing

Windows raw viewer

The Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer provides the ability to view, organize, and print photos captured in RAW image formats from supported Canon and Nikon digital cameras.

It allows Windows proprietary image viewer to open and view raw files, its what I use for a quick look.
Don't forget, when you've decided what is worth editing......you can't...:)
