I would be grateful if someone could advise me on installing my new elements 7 prog. At the moment I have elem. 5 on my computer(win xp) & use the organiser for finding all photos .If I go ahead and install 7 & then remove 5 would I mess up my system/ organiser . I cnnot find anything in the elements books Ihave about this upgrading .I thought it would have been well covered.regards colin.

I think it will just search for all images and automatically load them into organiser, it shouldnt mess anything up. Create a system restore point on your pc before installing and then if it doesnt go to plan you can always reverse the changes.

Thanks for your advice , I will create a restore point , that is a good suggestion . I am just concerned about giving my self a bigger task than first envvisaged, i am sure I will not do anything irrecoverable. thanks again. colin.

No problem Collin, you shouldnt go far wrong if you use the restore point route.

Creating a restore point is well worth doing before you install.
Elements keeps the stored picture data in a file called 'Catalogue' I am unsure about XP, I use Vista, but if you look in:
C/ProgramData/Adobe/Photoshop Elements/Catalogs/My Catalog
you should find your stored data.
When you install Elements 7 and you already have Elements 5 installed, it will create a new folder in 'Catalogs' called 'My Catalog7.
When you run the new Elements 7 program and select Organise, you have the option under file - Catalog... to restore the catalog, you then need to follow on screen instructions to connect Elements 7 to the old catalog.
I would strongly suggest making a back up or copy of the catalog file either to a DVD or to somewhere else on your hard drive/external drive before you attempt any of this work.
For safety I wouldnt delete any files at all until you are satisfied that Elements 7 organiser is fully working ,and that all your data has been transfered to 7.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your advice sbowler & trev, I took it all on board & have now completed the install successfully. There was info on the disk which addressed some of my concerns but i had not loaded the disk before posting . Great stuff ,I will now start getting into it. Thanks again ..... colin

I would create a restore point as a back up to be safe but you shouldnt need to do it.

The photos are not stored in photoshop all the organisor does is find where they are on your pc and indexes them to find it with short cuts.

Thanks for that . I understand , all sorted now I did think the organiser may take hours to update but it only took 10 minutes. colin
