This might be a daft question but since I don't know...

Is 194.171.3.56 the same as 194.171.003.056 ?

I bought a Sony BD player that should connect wirelessly to my router but will only let me enter i.p. addresses in the second format above ^

Cheers, that's one less possible reason why it won't connect :)

194 seems a strange address range - usually wireless networks range like 192.168 blah blah

I think you may be looking at your external ip address rather than internal network. If on a pc go to start>run> type CMD then IPCONFIG

In there you will see the router address etc.

(and sorry if I am wrong about the 194 being external :) )

Try logging onto the router and check the Sony is allowed in the access permssions.

id be inclined to agree unless the OP has reset the LAN side IP range for some reason.

According to the specs most Sony Blu Ray players utilise DHCP so there is no reason to set up the IP address manually? I would probably concentrate on leaving at DHCP and then getting the wireless security configuration enabled. If you must use what is called a 'static' IP address you usually have to configure the router to reserve the IP you wish to use otherwise it will refuse to communicate with the device (BLu Ray player).

Most routers allows you to reserve an IP for a particular device but you will need the 'MAC' address (or hardware address) of the Blu Ray player. This is usually stamped on the rear are the underside of the Blu Ray player. Failing that it will probably tell you the MAC/Hardware address in the Blu Ray config screen.

Its actually a lot simpler than the above sounds. ;)

The sample above was just made up, it's not the actual address, I need to put the i.p. address in manually as the Sony insists on using 169.254...if I choose automatic which the router just doesn't like.

/edit, the Router can see the BD player and the BD player can see the router, they just won't connect. The wpa type and key are correct, the i.p. I choose is within the range the router is set to accept.

Ah that means its not connecting to your router, 169.254 is a default address if the device cant speak to the DHCP server. It sounds like you have a problem somewhere else !

What wireless router do you have ?

Check the Broadcast SSID on the router, make sure you have it correctly put into the settings of the bluray, its IS case sensitive so make sure you dont have caps where they shouldnt be. Make sure you have the password (again case sensitive) spelled or typed correclty ! Once you have this lot sorted it should connect and get a DHCP address. Also do you have to press a button on the router to add devices ?

Another edit <rolleyes> lol

Also make sure you have the correct security enabled, WEP and WPA are not interchangeable, unless the router or device can use both !

Cheers Ian, all that ^ is done and checked and triple checked. There will be some stupidly simple reason for it I know.

That's the last chance solution, I'm sure it will work that way, I just hate to be defeated by technology!

Just thinking its a way of testing the bluray etc to make sure the networking works, and DHCP is functioning correctly. Once it works wired you know you stnad a chance of getting it working wirelessly, its then just a matter of working through all the options.

I know my mums router, is with Orange and you have to press a button to add a wifi device and its time limited, you dont have anything like that do you ?

any time i have had issues connecting wirelessly, its always been the security, as if its not setup properly the device will never get a IP address, because its never allowing the device to even speak to the DHCP server.

I usually get pen and paper and go through all the settings on the router,

SSID =
Security Type = WEP/WPA/WPA2 etc
Password =

Is the SSID hidden from public view ? sometimes they dont like that ?

Automatic is not the same as DHCP mate, automatic is only chosen (169.x.x.x) if it is unable to obtain an IP address via DHCP. There may be a problem with the Blu Ray obtaining a DHCP from the wireless router. Normally this is due to a wireless security key issue or a hidden SSID (if your router uses a hidden SSID you need to explicitly state this in the Blu Ray config).

The SSID is not hidden Mark, as I said above both machines can see each other, the Sony just won't connect wirelessly, I've linked them via cable and wired works just fine so I sppose that will do for now.

Yeah sorry I realised after I replied that IanC had already covered the points; it may be worthwhile checking to see if there is a firmware update for your blu rayer player - just out of interest do you know the model number of the unit.

(edited to add: And yet again Ian beats me to asking the model number :D )

lol it's a BDP S560 (very good price in Currys atmo in case anyone is interested;) ) the firmware is up to date. What I need to do now is try my Avatar BD to see if it plays.
