Is it now simply called Windows ?

Yes
After all that silly messing about I had with updating from windows 7 to windows 10, via the free upgrade app, I thought I would have a look at the new laptops. Just noticed on the sites I have been on, Currys, John Lewis, and various others. They are simply stating Windows laptops, and the in-depth laptop description only states Windows, it does not say Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Clever or sneaky?

I'm not sure about either to be honest, it is true and accurate is it not? They are Windows laptops.

What happened to Windows 9?

Apparently windows 10 is going to be the last one as such, and it's simply going to continue and update from that. Could be a clever move, as people will no longer be able to say I hate windows 8 or 10, as it will simply be known as windows! As suppose you could just simply say, I hate Windows

Must admit, I did like Windows 95,98 and 2000. My favourites were XP and Vista, top of the list Windows 7 that I am sticking with, as long as I possibly can. I just could not get along with windows 8, neither could most of the worlds population it seems ;)

A lot of laptops are still being shipped with 8.1 and on setup you do your own upgrade to 10. I just bought one last week. Before the Win10 launch I looked on the website and everything said 'Windows 8.1'. After the launch (when I ordered) it said 'Windows'. Apart from the time it took, the upgrade could hardly have been easier.
A plug for Windows 10 here - my desktop is still XP, I use XP at work, the laptop I replaced was XP and I've used a Windows 7 laptop and didn't particularly like it. I've never used 8 or 8.1. I like 10. I didn't have any problem setting up/configuring with no 'user manual', it networks with my XP desktop, runs all the software I consider essential even though some of it dates from the Windows 95 era though some of it had to be manually installed, and the 'start screen' (now just a panel) is very configurable makng it very easy to run your apps from it. And I'm not particularly computer-savvy.

I was thinking of getting a new laptop, but I do not want Windows 10 and I certainly don't want windows 8 :( . I wonder what a Chrome book is like to use ?

Of all of them I preferred XP pro, I didn't like Vista at all, out of necessity it went to W7 ( PC went into melt down mode and XP no longer supported)
Actually it didn't take that long to get the hang of it, the up date to 10 icon is sat on my task bar, and has been for some weeks now,
I'm not in the slightest bit interested in clicking it. maybe in 5 years time, when its sorted, I might, who knows?

For many, a chromebook is ideal. Or you could buy a computer and hoik off windows and put Ubuntu or Mint or one of the other nice OSs on it. There is even a way to get your money back on the pre installed Windows.

I must admit I did like Vista, I really got the hang of it and it was so easy to use and keep clean. I think it was Windows ME that was the tricky one to clean, floppy and a bit of code then discs. ( or was it XP ? )

Never even used a Chrome Book, no idea what is on there. Or is it just for internet browsing ?

My faves were XP and ME.
Still use XP a lot in VMs but ME will no longer work on modern PCs - think the architecture changed so loading it crashes half way through.

I never used that, I'm sure that XP wasn't like that though?

I went 95/98/XP/W7.
The laptop was running Vista. That went, pop, current one is running W7

My old laptop that runs XP died a few weeks ago, it's was OK when not connected to the net. But I reckon something was downloaded to it, and all other pcs running old software. Probably so we all had to upgrade :(

Maybe it was windows 98 then, although it was one that my brother built, so it may have been his own secret code he wrote

It just wont be the same cleaning your PC, I used like that catchy theme music that played. It played on first set up, after you had cleaned the PC, or on first start up. I think it was Windows XP

I really liked 3.11 for Workgroups. It seemed quite advanced for its time (about mid 90s I think).
95 was OK, as I recall but I never got on with ME or Vista.

Glad to see other liking XP, for years it appeared many disliked it, but for me it was rock solid. Currently running 7 and it is good.

Never used 8 but saw it on a friend's laptop. She hated it and spent loads of time wiping greasy fingermarks from the screen.

Like other new versions of Windows an upgrade is probably inevitable, eventually, but I'll wait until any bugs have been sorted. Have to say I have not heard of anything that has caused great difficulty, but I'd be surprised if it runs perfectly from the word go.

Dave

PS Heard that there is no Windows 9 because Seven Eight Nine ;)

I think their best versions were 3.11, 98, 2000, XP and windows 7. I've upgraded my windows laptop from 8.1 to 10 because 8 was god awful, but as I'm a mac user now, the laptop rarely gets used so I can't really comment on 10. It's looks much better than 8 though.

Posting this from a chromebook and I love it - battery last for ever (10-12 hours), it's light, and this one has a full HD screen. However, just about everything you do on it is browser based, so I use Google docs rather than office and store things on the cloud rather than locally as there is not a lot of onboard memory. You can put an SD card in and use that if you want more. Can't install software on it though, so no LR or PS, it's all done using apps available through the app store. I use the main laptop for LR and PS with a second screen, and use this as a replacement for my iPad as that is now getting slow.

I liked the Commodore Amiga and my old Ford Consul 375;) but decided to stop living in the past and move on to better things.:exit:
Like the MkI Capri and the MSX machines? :D

I was going to buy a Ford Zephyr in the 70s, opted for an Austin 1100 instead :) Yes things do move on, it's just not user friendly. I think stuff is geared up for the manufacturers benefit. Like old cars you could work on yourself, new cars are difficult to work on. Same as Computers, feels like Windows is getting harder to do things on, and forcing things on the user :(

Escort RS2000 or Windows 2000 which one do you prefer? Oh and which one was the fastest ?

So far Windows 7 is my favourite, I'm keeping it as long as I can. I know it will become defunct soon, well Microsoft will make sure of that :(

Windows 9 was skipped to avoid confusion with windows 95 and 98

Actually as far as I can tell from what I read, it was skipped because Microsoft wanted to put in a big distance between Windows 8 and Windows 10. Microsoft feel so embarrassed at the amount of so many people complaining about the missing Start button, which would feel like Window's flagship feature, as well as so many people refusing to upgrade to Win 8 or 8.1, all that, so much that Microsoft decided to build new Windows, but wanted to make Windows 8 feel like history.

It is living in the past....Perhaps you should get a 'sports car' as well :p Windows ;) is lovely, never was too keen on the previous versions, this made me switch back from a Mac...

RS2000 all the way, no contest (y)

And same here (y)
And yes I also agree with the latter comment, it also seems that "they" want everything on the cloud, I guess its easier to "watch us" from there ;)

Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and ME are all a family of the 4th generation Windows.

XP would be 5th generation, then Vista is 6th generation, then the 7th generation, as it happens, is called Windows 7, so 8th generation is Window 8 and 8.1,

9th generation Windows should be called Window I've-lost-count

Sports car never , beauty of the old Ford Consul was the bench seats in the front, column gear change, no handbrake or gearstick in the way. A real passion wagon:cool:

The good thing about the old versions is you have now forgotten some of the bad bits. But as expectations were lower back then it didn't seem an issue. Try going back and you'll see what I mean. I never managed to get networking going on XP. But on 7 no problem.

This, to a fair degree. I still use an XP-based machine at work to drive a specific instrument, and it's a reminder of how slick and clean modern desktop interfaces have become. While typing this I have also remembered that I still have a gaming box kicking around with W98 and W2000 on it for playing mechwarrior mercs, but that's not been used for a year or so. If anything breaks then that's the end for it.

I'm much happier with the way windows development has gone for the desktop. Vista and 7 were mungy pastel coloured messes, where everything was indistinct and icons muddled and blurred together. While the flat look does have echos of 10 year old linux desktops, at least it's crisp and clean again - and they haven't screwed up screen fonts like Apple. Very happy with W8.1, and 10 looks good now my evaluation version has updated to full. Another couple of months and I'll update our 2 W8.1 machines to 10 for everyday use.

Lol you should have tried windows 3.0 it was a flipping nightmare. Load the Wollongong IP stack, somewhere in memory no mans land. It's was all s*** compared to today :)

Yes. Even worse. And probably a whole load of other limitations of things we take for granted today.

Many install the old systems on a Virtual Machine just to run a specific game or application. Which might let you continue to use mechwarrior. And setting up a VM is as easy as installing a VM application and then choosing an OS from a menu. Once the os install completes and starts up, you can install your program on it as if you actually sitting at a real machine.
