Is my sensor broken?

Hi there,

Been taking some photo's at a friends little 'uns Christening today and just been reviewing some of the photo's and noticed this on loads of them

Notice the red 'artifact' just above the lips (the philtrum)

This is 100% crop no processing done at all, It looks worse before converting to JPEG

Taken with my kit lens @38mm f5 1/80 at ISO800, I shoot only RAW.

This shows up really obvious in these pics but less in others but I'm pretty sure it's in them all, I've changed to my nifty fifty and took a shot of my lens cover @ ISO200 and it show'd up there too.

I've reviewed pics I took at some Chinese NY celebrations last week and can't find the same problem in those, though the subject matter is really colourful so that doesn't help.

I guess I'm asking what is this? It's not what I'd expect sensor dust to look like so I'm thinking the worst!!

Thanks for all your help

Joe

No, you have a hot pixels which are common at higher ISOs! Nothing to worry about, they can be automatically mapped out, or easily cloned out in photoshop if it worries you :)

Thanks for the quick replies but my test shot of my lens cap shows the hot pixel even at ISO200 1/200. The linked info suggests it's a high ISO / long exposure issue.
And if it is this problem are the above solutions easy, I'm not too keen on PSing it out on every photo lol.

Your camera is goosed.

I`ll bid you £25 for it...............:naughty:

They can be automatically mapped out so the camera effectively disguises it.

Cheers for the offer fracster, I'll bear it in mind :)

i know google is my friend but is 'mapping out' something I can do myself on a D40 or is it a send to Nikon job?

Joe

I would read the manual. I know my 450D does it, but it's a bit newer than the D40.

Well I RTFM this morning and there's no mention of how to/if you can map the pixels in a D40.
Looks like I'll need to do some extensive googling

Don't worry about it, won't show in print, and its pointless staring at things at 100% looking for problems.

If you really want to worry about this enough to fix, go here:

I have to agree with other comments - stop pixel peeping! :)

View the image at normal size. Print it A4 and show it to someone. Do they see anything without you pointing at it? if they do then maybe you do have a problem.

No idea if it is the same with Nikon but on canon long exposure noise reduction cancels out all that stuff at anything over 1 second so it really isn't a problem.

"anything over 1 second..."

But the OP's shot was taken at 1/80 sec.

It's a pain but on the whole I agree that pixel peeping is only going to give you grief. I think that you should try and forget this spot and just clone it out when it really matters, which I hope isn't too often.

And its 100% crop of a high iso shot which you only do when pixel peeping. It may really be a problem but it is more likely that it isn't.

Ok, the evidence has been heard and I've been tried and convicted of pixel peeping.
I plead guilty as charged. :)
Thanks for all the help.
