Is there a downside to a sensor clean?

I just wondered... if you think your sensor doesn't really need cleaning - is it better left as it is - even if the people doing the cleaning are professionals?

I've just been told my sensor will be cleaned as part of a service, and I'm not sure whether to ask them not to. I can't see any dust on my images, though maybe I haven't scrutinised them enough. .

I've never had a sensor cleaned before. The one time I got dust bunnies, I managed to clear them with a rocket blower and the camera's own cleaning function - and this was on a different camera.

Get it done. They will almost certainly do it anyway. It you're getting it done as part of a service then they'll also vac out the chamber and clean round the seals and things - the cause of dust bunnies. Well worth it.
 
Done correctly, it does no harm.
 
Great thanks. That's put my mind at rest. I was just concerned that maybe it could add to wear and tear on the sensor.

have you tested it - f16 or f22 against a white wall and then check the images for spots

most people I know clean their own sensor - straight forward job on a DSLR - it's really cleaning the glass covering the sensor and it is reasonably robust

No I hadn't tested it and I have sent the camera off now. As I said though, I have not noticed any dust on images and I have taken a few landscapes at f/22. I did have dust in the viewfinder so I think at one time I did specifically look for dust on the images, but that was a while ago now.

I know one day I will have to clean my sensor, but it was the thought of it being cleaned when it wasn't necessary that was bothering me. Can't wait till I get it back now :)
 
The first time I cleaned my own sensor (7D), I somehow managed to lodge a tiny hair inside the viewfinder box. I never got it out and the thing bugged me for months before I sold it on.

That was also the last time I cleaned a sensor.
