Jessops on the verge of administration

Not really, the move would've been planned ages ago, and probably was due to the lease on the existing site up for renewal and/or better deal in the new location.

Their move was about 100 meters along in the same centre, literally went from the last unit upstairs on one side to the first unit downstairs on the other side. Same landlord, so I doubt the lease was an issue.

Oh No! Were are we going to try out equipment before buying on line now?

Good question - last year when Jessops were selling Pentax equipment for very good prices I went to look at the DA17-70 as my DA*16-50 was at JPS for repair - dreaded SDM failure - at the Richmond store. The lens they were about to hand over to me had faulty AF which meant I left it there - I had no intention of getting the same item online on the basis that I could get another defective one, only then I would have to return it....

Now I have no 17-70 but a perfect 16-50:cool:

Another one bites the dust.

A pity, the manager of my local store (Llandudno) is/was very knowledgeable and helpful.

I hope those who end up out of a job find alternative work soon.

thats what I thought, a shame for the people that work there, our local store has always been good

Sky news states they have official made an application for administration this morning and confirmation is expected in hours

Oops oy just noticed this is stated above

Better location then to maximise on footfall entering the mall.
Still would've been planned for, rather than deciding on a whim to move stock and fittings overnight.
Very few would've been aware of the situation, for the rest, it was just business as usual.
Timing sucks for completion, and we don't know the backstory - maybe poor Christmas results has been the last straw for HSBC to call time on weeing into the wind.

Yes that's me. I was waiting til Thursday to order a light meter but sounds like I best do it the second I get home.

I have £50 worth of gift cards I was going to spend this week and just looked you can't use them online. I'd imagine by the weekend they won't be accepting them, that's the earliest I can get there :(

For a company that size, it'd be business as usual whilst they dealt with the looming prospect of having to call in the administrators - couldn't give their competitors a sniff that they were managing to survive.
Besides, the amount they are in hock to their creditors would make the move expenditure look little more than pocket change.

Well said.

lol, what equipment? I went over to have a look (and buy!) a suitable bag but couldn't find anything remotely large enough. The fact the overcharge for most of their goods finally turned around and hit them where it hurts.

We still have Calumet (even more overpriced but better stocked) and trade shows like Focus coming in March.

Really, Jessops needed better sales assistants, more diversity and more aggressive pricing.

When I bought my 7D (three years ago now ) Jessops was only £10 more expensive than the cheapest supplier so I bought from them with the added bonus of 12 months interest free. At times they have been the cheapest supplier for some of the kit I've bought but I wonder to what extent people haven't even considered looking there having assumed that they'll be more expensive than the various online options.

Very sad news indeed for their employees.

I have bought a good few items over the years from Jessops, such as bodies lenses and memory cards, I have bought the odd bag or two and various other items such as a tripod and batteries etc etc. I know a lot of people did not like Jessops, but I did have a few good experiences here, and yes one or two bad ones when staff appeared uninterested and unhelpful.

But on the whole I will be sorry to see them go, I will probably go to John Lewis to try out camera stuff, if Jessops really does go.

Administration officially announced a few minutes ago - NO RETURNS OR VOUCHERS BEING ACCEPTED according to Sky announcement.

Now officially in administration.

My most recent visit to Jessops looking for a 16GB Sandisk Extreme SDHC:

Jessops - £59.95
Amazon - £10.26

Exactly the same item. Guess where my money went?

I did buy my DSLR in Jessops in December '11 though because it was a decent deal at the time.

A great shame. We can't blame them for almost dumping film in an effort to supply the digital mainstream and save their business. I don't know where we will go in an emergency, like being out and about and running out of FP4 or Tri-X. I remember buying my first half decent camera (a Zenith E) by mail order in 1968 from a firm in Leicester, I'm wondering if it was from Jessops?

were do people stand on vouchers ? if you have one is it now tough luck then ? that just does not seem right...

Not accepting returns or vouchers

It really is a shame - they bring/have brought so many people into the hobby! Including myself from allowing people to get their hands on the kit!

Well, I was going to advise voucher holders to get to the stores ASAP rather than use them online but it seems that you've been royally screwed, just like Zavvi did people a couple of years ago. While one can't blame store employees for selling vouchers (poor sods, even if some of them are as much use as a fart in a wetsuit!), the management must have seen the collapse on the cards and should have stopped selling vouchers.

IIRC, some insurance companies give Jessops vouchers as payment on photographic kit claims - where do those people stand?

It really is sad.

If I needed kit in an emergency at least I had a Jessops in my town.

Only this Summer, I had a minor emergency the night before a job. Ordered a new body online and picked it up the next morning. Hopefully this will never happen again, but...... :(

The other good thing about Jessops - it was easy to take kit back if it went wrong!

Sad.

In September, I ordered a Fuji HS30 online to pick up in store and knew they had plenty in stock. When I got the confirmation e-mail, it told me my order would be ready to pick up 3 days later! Comet had the same camera and a better package deal (and matched Jessops price) and had it ready for me when the store opened.

I've bought quite a few stuff from them, not the cheapest but certainly most convenient.

so when does the fire sale start.

Might pop in tomorrow to see what's on offer before the general public vultures (I know I'll be a vulture too!) descend on the carcass. I don't need anything but wanting is a whole different ball game!!!

Not my favourite camera shop by a long way, but it will be a bow to the high street and a bigger blow to those employed there

Hope if the worst does happen the workers get sorted, been there twice myself i know how it feels

Shocker about the vouchers situation! Just after Crimbo too, when I imagine they sold lots of them. Effectively that meant many customers made a down payment for nothing in return; how the administrators can get away with that is pretty rough.

A very sad day for all of the employees.

I have always had very good service with Jessops. They were local, you could always haggle a bit on price for larger purchases which made them competitive and if you had a problem you could always take it back for an exchange.

It is a great shame.

I still remember Jessops as it used to be, I worked in Leicester in the late 90's about 100 yards from their Granby Street store and a mile from their 'home' in Hinkley Road. It had lots a excellent stock (new and used) plus was staffed by people who knew about what they were selling and interested in photography.

I dread to think how much of my cash they have had over the years and I know it is many years since they could really be considered a specialist store but I am very sorry to see this happen despite its inevitability.

Also no exchanges, so if you bought a Jessops bag or tripod etc and its faulty ....

I might be wrong, but didn't Comet's administrators relent on not honouring vouchers/gift cards. So might be a glimmer of hope there. Just have to wait and see.

From BBC

Troubled High Street camera retailer Jessops has gone into administration, with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) appointed as the administrator.

In recent years, it has been hit by increasing competition from supermarkets and internet retailers.

Jessops, which was founded in Leicester in 1935, has 192 stores in the UK and employs about 2,000 staff.

The administrators said that it was "inevitable" that some stores would have to close.

PwC said that while Jessops was a well-known brand with a strong reputation for service, its core marketplace had seen a significant decline in 2012, which was forecast to continue in 2013.

Despite additional funding being made available, Jessops had not generated the profits it had planned, PwC added.

In 2009, Jessops managed to avoid administration by agreeing a debt for equity swap with its lender HSBC.

'Yet another blow'
Rob Hunt, joint administrator and partner at PwC, said: "Our most pressing task is to review the company's financial position and hold discussions with its principal stakeholders to see if the business can be preserved.

"Trading in the stores is hoped to continue today but is critically dependent on these ongoing discussions. However, in the current economic climate it is inevitable that there will be store closures."

PwC added that at present Jessops would not honour customer vouchers or accept returned goods.

Julie Palmer, a partner at business recovery group Begbies Traynor, said Jessops' administration was "yet another blow" for the UK High Street and showed that January was a high risk month for retailers.

"With substantial cash outflows on the 25 December quarterly rent day combining with fierce pricing competition during the January sales, it puts significant pressure on finances.

"The administration of such a household name can only serve to damage consumer confidence further in the months ahead."

I have a lens on order with them on finance...What do you think the chances of me getting it or if I should cancel it anyway with the no returns policy?

I've had nothing but awful service from the Birmingham store, last straw was they wouldn't let/didn't want to sell me a 1dx (and this wasn't a web match deal) so while it's a real shame for jobs, I'm not sorry to see them go.

Looks like Calumet and The Flash Centre are the only ones left in Birmingham, nothing on the high street.

cancel because they might refuse to even ship it. I bet it is sold cheaper elsewhere
