..............I'm going away soon night fishing for the weekend and am after advice for the best settings to use at night to take my trophy shots (if I'm lucky enough to catch)!

I'll be using my 60D on a tripod with a wireless remote release.

Would I be correct in saying that my nifty fifty is better than my 17-85usm in low light conditions?

Thanks for any help

I grabbed a couple of little LED lights from b and q and stuck them in my camera bad, im guessing you have some light there, a few cheap LEDs pointed in the right direction may be enough of a boost to light you and the catch for a decent shot, the obvious option is flash, is this totally out of the question?? Would make results easier to get...

I'll admit to having no idea what night fishing entails, but i'm thinking its maybe more of a "dark" than "low light" situation.

Even if there is some light if you are needing to use the 50mm @ f1.8 then focus will be a nightmare anyway. I'd be packing a few flashes anyway and an LED headtorch

if it's allowed use a carp sack and wait till morning, other than that you will have to use flash, i wouldn't slow the shutter down as you will not keep the fish still long enough

All depends how much light you have to play with but all the lakes i have fished at it's is normally totally dark or moon light only

+1  sack them up.

I agree.

Ignore my previous post I misunderstood the thread title .

thanks for the replies guys, unfortunately sacking is not an option. So if I catch at night, moonlight and the on board flash will be my only options for light.

One other thing I thought of was to have a go in your garden or something like that first, get a rough idea of how to set focus at a particular distance to fit what you want in the frame and see if the flash will be suitable, better to have a practice than try to figure all that out on a riverbank.
