im starting into football photography i some time get to borrow a 70-200mm afs 2.8 but i just dnot think it has enough reach so i was looking at the nikon
80-400mm afs or the nikon 300mm f4 ?

what do you think and would be better ?

cheers alex

Depends on your budget; if you can afford the 70-200mm f2.8 then a similar budget would probably get you a Sigma 120-300 f2.8, which gives you the reach you want and is a sharp (albeit quite heavy!) lens.

The 80-400 is a good lens but the focusing speed may be caught out when following action and the maximum aperture won't be enough in low light. The 300mm f4 is a sharp lens but you'd get more flexibility with the Sigma. Another option is a 1.4x converter with the 70-200mm but of course you'd lose a stop on the maximum aperture...

Lots of options! Can you hire or borrow the 70-200 and 120-300 and see which suits you best?

the 70-200m is dads so i only get it when he is not using it :) yeah i will have a look i thought f4 mite be a bit slow but the 300mm 2.8 i wow what a diffrence in price are they really that much fast that f4 ? :)

Ah ok, in which case why not see how you get on with the 70-200mm first? You will be able to cover action at one end of the pitch and players running at goal if you position yourself behind the goal line, or from the halfway line you can cover the action in the midfield area. You'll then begin to know whether you do need more reach or not.
