Sorry in advance as I put up thread yesterday asking about zooms but having kinda changed my mind on bodies wondered if anyone had any other thoughts .Sitting with a bit of a budget after selling all my Fuji gear don't want to make a mistake. Had made up my mind to get the Nikon D7200 but I'm leaning more towards a D750. With this I would intend to purchase a Sigma 12-24mm which Ive used before and like. I would like a decent compact zoom. Having never used Nikon lenses (always Canon) I'd like to stick with a Nikon lens if I can so trying to find one to fit in with this wide angle and give me a bit of a reach at other end. I don't mind going down the Sigma route but am struggling with them as well.
 
If you decide to go for the D750 (which is an excellent camera btw) then the 24-120mm f4 VR is very decent as is the 24-85mm VR. No experience of the Siggy 12-24 on FF but if you wanted a Nikon lens then the newest 18-35 AFS G is really rather good. fwiw 18mm on FF gives the same FoV as 12mm on crop.

28~300mm is a practical tool but, if you intent to go for the D750, I
would recommend you choose some more serious alternative.

YES its stunning even the close focussing it really is unbelievable for the focal range.
I know several other togs ironically one with a D750 & D700 another with a D3/D700 & D7100 and myself I dont know anyone who would sell it.
It is a little heavy but not as heavy as some other glass covering the same range. I often pair it up with 16-35mm f4 VR and a 16mm fisheye :)
FX I use D3 D700 & D810 with it.

I really can't see you needing to upgrade for years with this set up ?:)
But please try and get to a store where you can at least handle the gear first ! :):nikon:

I'd say the 24-85 slightly edges the 28-300 and is much lighter - but it doesn't go to 300!

I reckon any of the three (24-85, 24-120, 28-300) would pair well with the D750 as 'walkabout' lenses. Just select on weight and focal length range required.

And don't forget the D750 thread. :)

Thanks for this I'm going to check all this out when I get in. You've given me some food for thought. I'm used to using Canon 5DMK3's andbag ofCanon lenses for business then changed to Fuji mirrorless but cant say I'm in love with it so the change to Nikon is big step for me. Just getting my head round what will suit.

Well, in a roundabout way maybe.... it's a photo I took of a wild Spar(a young male) in my woods(a bird I'd love to fly)...
Sparrowhawks and Goshawks are shortwings, but I flew Harris Hawks, 2 males :)
