Lumix lx100 vs sony rx100

I'll have to have a hunt and a play when we get back. The Mk IV is just too expensive at £848 but I could just about justify the £519 (after cashback) of the III if/when the XFs die! BUT, there's also the Nikon P900 which I'm sure will drop from its current £499. I know it's not pocketable but that zoom range is still mighty tempting, IF the IQ is any good.
Panamoz are doing the mk4 for 615 ish if you don't mind an import.

You would need one mighty big pocket for that camera, very good zoom. The tiny tiny sensor may prove hard to give a decent IQ, can't see it myself.
I loved the quality of the rx100 and its so user friendly.

I am very tempted, just got to start saving the pennies :)

I know that the P900 isn't exactly a compact BUT, if it can do what a bag full of bodies and lenses can at a fraction of the weight and bulk while delivering decent IQ, I can make a couple of compromises! I will be waiting until I can have a good play before making any decisions, whether it's a pocket compact or a sooperdooperzoom bridge!

Just to add my thoughts to this thread.
I have a RX 100 mk3 arriving today :)
I did consider the Panasonic LX 100, this also currently has £100.00 cashback so there is only approx £20.00 difference (advantage RX100) The LX 100 has an awful lot going for it but the major reasons I choose the Sony were:
'Pocketability' I already have a Sony A6000 which body wise is about the same size as the LX100.
'Useability' the Sony has a 'vari-angle' lcd screen (LX100 fixed) I do a lot of dog photography and often like to get down to eye level/ground level with them. This is unworkable with a fixed lcd.

How does the A6000 compare in use? I hear so many good things.

A6000 is a very good camera but you will lose out out on size. The big problem is the 16-50mm pancake lens is very average at best, the RX100 is optically better and faster than the A6000 kit lens.

If size and lens range is important then you would be better off looking at the Panasonic GM series.

I assume you are asking me how the A6000 compares to the RX100 mk3 in use ? If so I cannot answer yet as the RX is due for delivery today.
However, I am very happy with the A6000, the IQ is superb (apsc) I primarily use it with the sony 35mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/1.8 both super prime lens. In use if I could have one wish it would be a touch screen lcd.

Further to Willo's answer.
I also own the 16-50 kit lens and while I agree the A6000 deserves to be used with better quality glass than this (true of kit lens with many cameras) the 16-50 is not that bad. Distortion is the worst problem I think. I use the DXO Optics software on the RAW file and it does a great job of correcting the distorting and presenting a very useable picture.

My Panasonic TZ55 has a 20X zoom but only a small 1/2.3 sensor, the IQ is terrible. I will only use the camera for zooming into wild life while doing video, for photos its terrible! The Nikon P900 also has a tiny 1/2.3 sensor, so can't see the IQ being too good. But I could be wrong.

Well despite all the great words toward the sony. I have sourced a lx100, as good as new (only a few month old) with genuine case and spare battery which i grabbed on ebay. Thanks all for the advice and i'm sure this thread as been interesting to a whole lot of people. Now maybe i'll upgrade my girlfriend pocket camera for a sony rx100 mk1 so we can get best of both.

I was watching a few on ebay. So there is clearly a few around. I bought mine with an included "official" Panasonic case. To be fair i wouldn't bother with the case is pretty bad, the top half makes the camera really much bigger, the bottom half is nice but it forbide all access to the battery, sd card, and other connections.
