No
I don't want to open the debate again, but just suppose I wanted to add some music to one particular gallery on my site, If I bought the music from itunes does that mean I can use it on my site?

Don't bother...there are increasingly more ways for copyright holders to have services crawl the net automatically for their material.

I'm not sure where from, but I'm sure you can find some royalty-free music from somewhere.

No. And nothing beats this in terms of what's annoying on the internet.

Truth - websites that start playing music that interrupts what i'm already listening to are incredibly annoying to the point they get closed and never opened again.

Aside from the copyright issues pointed out above, chances are that if you bought the song from iTunes then you'll only be able to play it using an authorised copy of iTunes, iPod or iPhone due to the copy protection they use.

Apple dropped DRM completely from iTunes over 6 months ago didn't they?

Not sure, there was something in the press about it. I can't play stuff I've downloaded ages ago on another computer, so DRM protected tracks obviously stay that way.

That's pretty much the case. You cannot use it on a website unless you buy a licence for that use. iTunes does not give you that licence.

Should you choose to ignore the law and use it, the worst your likely to get is a letter asking you to remove it if they notice.

Have a search here for the various threads where people have found their images being used on other sites without permission.

Think how you would feel if one of your images was being used the same way.

It's the same rules for music.

Steve.

You own a song to enjoy it, not a licence to broadcast it, and especially not in the course of a business. You could be land with a huge law suit.

Just Google " Copyright free music" there are loads of sites out there that you can get music for you web site for only a few pounds.

Personally music on web sites drives me crazy, but if you are promoting weddings it may be suitable

I agree I don't like music on site per se', I only wanted it for someone who expressly asked for it.

But would I be upset if someone used one of my images on their amateur site, without paying for it, but credited it to me? No, I'd take it as a compliment, and a free bit of advertising.

As for ripping off musicians, well they've been doing it to the public for the last 40 years, so it's "quid pro quo", in my book. When a musician or any other artist only earns as much as the average working man/woman then I'll start to feel guilty.

This was quite near the top of a google search.

Thanks, I've found some excellent music on that site.

Please define 'ripping off'. No one is forcing you to buy CD's, downloads or concert tickets.

Start feeling guilty then.

Steve.

So it would be wrong to use the music of a poor musician, but ok if they're rich? Is that the same for images? You can nick an image from a famous photographer, guilt free, but not one who hasn't made it yet?

I think you are highly confused with what a musician gets paid and what the label gets. Perhaps you are too narrow minded to know any other music apart from the ***** they play on your favourite radio station. In that case, you're a lost case.

Yes. It's only the elite 0.01% who earn mega-bucks. Probably the same amount as the elite 0.01% in any other industry earn.

Tesco seem to be ripping off their customers. I think I will go up there today and help myself to some free potatoes. About a quid pro quo's worth should do it.

Was that really called for?

The majority earn less.
