My wifi router has just died - Can I use another one?

This may seem like a really dumb question, so apologies in advance as I'm not really techie enough to know the answer for sure.

Last night during loads of power cuts, my wi fi router died. I want to replace it, can I just go and buy one off the shelf or does it need to be a specific router?

As I live in Spain, it can sometimes be tricky to understand all the info on the side of a box and the phone company are awful - They'd charge me over 80 euros for a new one. Do I need their router or will any one do?
 
Do you mean a modem/router (i.e. it also connects to the ISP as well as doing wireless)? It depends. The technology is all the same in the routers (ADSL2+ being the current crop) but some ISPs lock in the username/password configuration and depending on how techie you are or are not, it might be difficult to get it connected.
 
Well, lets put it this way, my tech ability is slightly better than my spanish ability and having to talk to a spanish call centre!! So I suppose I'll just have to give it a go!!
 
LOL... You'll need the information that will enable you to configure the router (normally a host address and login). If you have that, any one of the commercially available modem/routers should work. You could do worse than googling something like "replacing router <your ISP>"
 
My ISP sent me a mail with the information in. Sky (for example) send you out a configured router so it'll be ISP dependant. Is your original router totally dead or it just won't sync? If you can still access the setup page of the original router, you should be able to copy the information.
 
Original router won't pick up the ADSL and the alarm is permanently on. I reset it, switched it off and left it off for ages.

What kind of information would I have been sent? I've looked at all my stuff and the key was on the bottom of the router. I'm really not sure what I'm looking for regarding information.

Any good recommendations out there for routers?
 
This is the info that I found when I googles my ISP - This all looks like wiganese to me, is this the sort of info I need?

Won't the router pick it all up automatically?

Connection Type &#8211; PPPoE
VPI/VCI &#8211; 8/32
Encapsulation &#8211; LLC
Service Category &#8211; UBR
Telefonica ADSL Username &#8211; adslppp@telefonicanetpa
Telefonica ADSL Password &#8211; adslppp
 
And you have to find the place to put these in your new router. It will have a web page that is the configuration page. Try http://192.168.1.1 (it's the common address that is used for a lot of routers).

Failing that, which router do you have?
 
Haven't got one yet, I'll get one on Monday when the shops open - Ours still close out here on a Sunday :eek:

Can I get one that will pick this all up automatically? Any suggestions on an EASY set up make?
 
What make/model of router do you currently have? Who is your ISP? I thought you had a replacement from your dad? How are you posting these replies if your modem is down???
 
it sounds like your original router has dropped its firmware. wouldnt be uncommon following lots of power cuts.

as andy said who is your ISP? some will require a particular router, for example with sky you can either use their router or you have to try and clone the MAC onto another particular model of router.
 
although sky only like u to use there router, there is software that lets you extract the user and passworrd, this is on a netgear router / modem
so maybe there is a way of getting yours so that you can use your own
 
can I get the router to pick up its firmware? My problem out here with telefonica is that I have no English support at all, so I need to sort it myself. Router is in the bin now, is it fixable with that firmware stuff?

Last I heard you also need to clone the MAC

All I did was extract pass and user and put in another router and it was fine
I'm using sky router now but still have details invade I need to change it any time

Hmm odd, that came from a colleague who had to do it. His cousin works for sky too so probably where he got the advise from
