ND Grad Noob question

With the filter on will probably be favourite, and that's what matters, but be sure to check and adjust as necessary.

Be aware that the effect of the filter varies a lot with focal length, and also with f/number. Use the lens stop-down button to check at the shooting aperture for optimum positioning.

Expose everything with the filter on.

I always thought with a "grad" you metered for the forground noted settings then metered for sky to see difference in stops to work out which grad you need, then used the expoure settings for forground fitted filter and away you go

Thats how I do it....Spot Meter for foreground and sky to see the difference then apply the relevant grad.

Once the grad is on however I'll change to Evaluative and will tinker to get the histogram to where I want it.

I'm not saying it the right way, it maybe a convoluted way of doing it, but I don't find it a huge hassle.

I just stick on my nd8 and shoot. If I find the sky is too dark I slide the filter up slightly so it's lighter and shoot again.

I normally get it right straight off though, it's very easy!
