Hi just got my first ND grad from Lee, never used them before so simple noob question is would you expose the scene before applying the filter? Or expose with the filter in position?
With the filter on will probably be favourite, and that's what matters, but be sure to check and adjust as necessary.
Be aware that the effect of the filter varies a lot with focal length, and also with f/number. Use the lens stop-down button to check at the shooting aperture for optimum positioning.
I always thought with a "grad" you metered for the forground noted settings then metered for sky to see difference in stops to work out which grad you need, then used the expoure settings for forground fitted filter and away you go
