when i look at my photos on the computer some of my pictures which i can't open up it states (it looks like we don't support this file format). It also states dsc480nef, does anybody have any clue what i'm doing wrong

dsc480nef

If a file is really named "dsc480nef", try putting a dot
to the nef extension: dsc480.nef

Why that dot would disappear… got no idea

What software are trying to open it in, Ron?

If they are .nef files, then it looks like you have a Nikon and have set it to save your images in raw format. Lots of packages can read these files and process them to .tiff or .jpg, including the free software you can download from Nikon:

When I was a Nikon shooter (I have no shame about that) the manufacturers bundled software did a good job of basic corrections.
It also allows you to convert and save to other formats.

I'm with Kodiak though, the missing dot in front of the file type descriptor is the most likely cause.
