Yes
hi as per my d700 thread post.
i just checked my exif info from the last picture taken from my new d700 bought yesterday and its showing 398 shutter accuations.
at most i took 100 photos.
show i be doing something about this??
i just phoned jessops and they said i should have been told it was a display model, but its not store policy to discount display models.
should i return it and get a new one or one from some where else

Personally i take it back - X display could have been dropped and banged about , if you had a wedge of cash knocked off fair enough but new price = new camera

The number of actuations, as has been said is minimal and not going to effect anything, but thats not the point, you should have been told this had been on display and you could have then made a decision about it. So I think I'd agree with the above for peace of mind and return for a new sealed item - or a discount !!!

just spoke tp jessops again they wont discount it, but will try(he said) and find a new sealed box,but wont start looking until monday,so may not get it until next week.

not to impressed i may have to wait another weeks, the last of my holidays without having it to play with.

i know that it makes little differnce to the life of the shutter, but when spending the best part of 2 grand i dont expect to be getting a display model thats been used

I think you will find a lot of the Jessops stores only hold stock of one copy of many of the higher value cameras, which is used on display. And as far as I know, they won't give a discount because it has been handled.

A little story........ Last year I needed to urgently replace my camera when the shutter went on my D3 at a wedding on Saturday and I had a job on the Monday that required 2 cameras to be in use simultaneously.... so I HAD to buy something on the Sunday.

Phoned around several local-ish Jessops and the best (Nikon) camera any had in stock was the D300s. The first 3 stores admitted they only had one in stock and it was in the display cabinet. No discount, so I said "No thanks".

The fourth shop told me on the phone, they had it in stock and it wasn't display. When I arrived in store he had it all ready for me at the desk. He quickly opened the box for me to check it out. Looking back, I have no idea if the box was sealed....... but there wasn't a D300s in the display cabinet!

I was desperate as it was near closing time, so I bought it despite feeling convinced it WAS the display model.

I never thought to check the shutter count, but to be honest, 300 would not bother me..... it probably had 500-600 more by the end of the following day anyway.

With attitude like that i'd take it back for a full refund and buy from somewhere else........ Its a 2K camera not a £20 filter

The number of actuations wouldn't bother me, but if it's an ex display model (and the actuations are obviously down to demos to various potential customers, or staff playing about) and they seem to be admitting that it is, then they've a bit of a neck to not be offering you a discount!

Take it back and get your money refunded.
Terrible customer service, they don"t deserve a penny of your hard earned cash!

I don't think Jessops have ever offered a discount for ex-display. Think I've had a free uv filter or other accessory instead as model was ex-display.

That's the one advantage of buying online. There are no display models so they should all be brand spanking new and unused.

Mary Portas is right though. Service in shops and elsewhere these days is pretty poor.

Get your money back and buy from another shop!
Unfortunately, then it will become someone else's problem. They'll put it back in the box and flog it as new again.

I have to agree with most here, I would take it back & take your £££££ elsewhere!

I bought my Canon 50D from Currys, took 3 attempts to get a sealed box from the store room. The sales assistant was getting a bit miffed with me, but I simply said "no sealed box, no sale"

Hope you get sorted.

Mick

I'd be more worried about it having been dropped etc than the shutter count....shop assistants just won't look after it like you would. They should definitely have told you it was ex-display but it sounds like they will put it right.

If it shop stock you dont know how old it is, what grubby hands it has been in or what tests people have tried on it.
If you paid full price get a refund and buy from a retailer that canbe trusted to provide you with a brand new D700.
I have heard about Jessops doing this before.

Go to Jessops website and select the D700, on the page there is an option to cellect at store, just type in your postcode and see what comes up, if they are showing "pick up in 1 hour" at your local store then they have at least one in stock, but that too could be the display model.

Out of curiosity I looked myself, both my local Jessops are showing stock and I could pick up in 1 hour.

It is the law that all ex-display products are clearly marked as such and that the customer knows this before making a purchase.

Now they are not obliged to offer a discount, BUT you could go down the lines of "Maybe Trading Standards would like to hear about your underhanded selling practices"

Also an email to the MD will probably get you are few quids worth of vouchers.

I watched the top shelf of a display case in a Jessops store collapse whilst it was being stocked, taking everything down onto the other bodies, lenses and flashes below and the (laughing) staff member just put it all back in the cabinet without even checking for damage, so personally I wouldn't take a display model, regardless of the number of actuations.

Select a higher quantity (IE 2) and see who has them - that way you'll know that at least one of them is not the display model.

none of my local stores had any, they had to get it and the 24-70 from another store.

looking at that also its not a sealed box,but looking at my d90 box that didnt have any sort of seal either.

i think im going to return the d700 tomorow or monday along with the 24-70,just out of princable.
just need to find somewhere reliable to order from now

Getting a display model with no discount is digusting.
When I bought my ne tamron 10-24 they went to the cabinate to get the display one, I said woah hang on I want a new one, they said we will have to order one then I said fine go ahead.
When it arrived i opened it my self, they said what you doing, I said checking that its in one piece.

Another scenario may well be that the camera isn't a display model, but a customer return, which is more likely to explain a shutter count of several hundred.

The only Nikon boxes that come sealed are the ones for the refurbished cameras, so there's no way, other than the shutter count, of knowing whether a camera is new or not.

If you're buying from Jessops (either in person or via the website for collect at store) the best thing is to enquire first as to what the stock levels are at your chosen store. If they only have one, and that is very common nowadays with high value items at Jessops, then there's a fairly high chance it will be the display model.

Surely it is illegal to sell a display model as new?

to be honest i would have to return it and demand a full refund, its just underhanded to sell you an item as new when its ex display..

the more i hear about Jessops the less i like them, i went in to my local branch before Christmas and was looking at compact system cameras, i asked a staff member some questions and after 5 mins of him telling me how much of a pro HE was and how some one like me wouldnt be able to tell the difference in quality i voted with my feet..

this is the email i got back from sending one on there website to the store feedback part

Please accept my apologies that the level of service has fallen below the standards you would have expected.

We make every effort to ensure that customers are informed when they are purchasing stores ex demonstration models I can only apologise that in this instance this has not happened. I will send your feedback to the stores manager as well as their area manager who can look into the points raised so we are able to reach the high standards of service that we aim to meet.

not doing anything about it, though i did say i would be returning the lot and not buying from them again

I wouldn't be impressed if this were me - if they'd knocked a couple of hundred off, fair enough but not as it is.

And sometimes I think Jessops wonder why their business is a bit shaky/under performing financially...

if it was a display model then surely they would rotate the stock so that they all went out with just a few shots on them rather than a few hundred
i would say this is a customer return and as such would want a full refund asap

I posted about this when I got my 50D from jessops. I had vouchers as a replacement for my busted 40D so had to use them there. The first box came out unsealed and I asked if I could have a new sealed box. A little discussion about how I'd rather have a sealed box and they went back to the store room and got a sealed box.
So I took it, went back to work and checked it out. It had been used and resealed, so I went back to the shop.

"Sir. It was a sealed box, how do you know it's been used?"
"I think the jessops 4GB CF card with over 100 shots of the shop and .... Oh that assistant could be the giveaway.

Blatantly they resealed it when I asked for a sealed box! Haven't used any branch of jessops since.

Might it have been selected during assembly to use for testing for quality control? Either that or it sounds like a return.

You guys that have had problems with "used" gear being sold as new, and then return it - are you letting head office know why you returned them?

The store assistants, on the whole, don't care. Aside from any commission they might get they have no interest in why you're returning something, so telling them is of little use.

As has been mentioned above - a quick mail or letter to head office at least lets them know why they're losing customers. Now, I don't doubt that they wouldn't offer anything as a sweetener, especially as you've already returned the products, but if they get enough of these letters from people who have returned £500, £1000, £2000 worth of goods and they might just change the corporate policy on things like this.

i dout they care,i have still to return them but will be tmr.
they have already said they have no intention of reducing the cost or offering extras,to make up for it or to keep my customs.
ive already posted the reply i got which was just a sorry for this happening.i dout this went to head office though.i couldnt find any email adresses for the likes of that.
just the complaints part on there website.
its probably just another money sitting infront of a key board doing quick replys

That will never happen! If there was anywhere near that kind of profit in selling cameras, Jessops would quite happily let you walk out of the door with just the camera box in hand. Why do you think they try to sell you every possible accessory under the sun? Boost the margins!

No I agree with the majority on this one, I would be a bit miffed if I had paid out for a NEW camera and found out it was an ex-display model they had sold me, its not different from a new car and an ex-demstration model, you get discount for ex-demstration models so why not discount for ex-display??

Take it back get a refund and go else where unless they offer you something worth while.

Is there anyone on here that actually works for Jessops ???? would be interesting to hear their takeup of this situation.

Me personally, have never had a problem with them, but I have only bought a couple of things from them.

My local Jessops has a few cameras out on display to handle, tethered by a curly cable and placed on a stand

Surely they would be discounted when finally sold, must take a right bashing even if the shutter count is negligible

There did used to be a member here who did work for them.....as flash has already mentioned Nikon boxes aren't sealed, however every time i have bought my cameras from Jessops i have told them if their are any actuation's on it when i get home it's coming straight back, to date i have never had a problem with this, as soon i get get home i take a couple of shots an run it through exif software which i think is something everyone should do, in this situation if it was me it would have been back to the shop within the same day.
