Hi all,

I am all excited, got this urge to take up photography after taking lots of photos with my compact. After much research just been out and bought a canon 500d. The salesman in shop has terrified me about dust getting in the body. So I am now sat looking at it , to scared to take the cover of the body and fit the lens.:lol::lol::lol:. I will keep you informed of my progress.

Hey Mike, get that lens on and start taking pics!! Yes you will get dust in the camera, but it's really no big deal and you will have to learn that it is a fact of life with DSLR's. You can take steps to minimise it - ie careful where you change lens - but you'll not stop it. Just get out there and have some fun.

You'll probably end up with a whole arsenal of lens's soon, so get used to putting them on as sensibly as possible.

dust = fact of life when you have a DSLR.

Buy one of those rocket shaped dust blowers, and check for dust every now and again, and you'll be fine.

Don't not change lenses ever because you are scared of dust, it'll just harm your photography.

Which shop salesman? Just for curosity...I wonder why someone would said that unless he was trying to sell you blower or extended warranty with them:thinking:

Whilst I am not paranoid about dust, my last lens purchase was so that there was a large overlap in focal lengths between my main two lenses (18-135 and 55-250) so that I did not need to swap lenses every couple of shots.

This was a problem for me in the USA when every other shot was the other side of 55mm!

Hi all,
I have been out all weekend taking photos, and proved to my self I have a lot to learn. I have only played with the auto modes for now, but thoroughly enjoyed every minute of playing around with my new toy.

I have a 18-55 lens only at present, but as I want to shoot wild life I am going to have to get another lens. Which one I don't have a clue at moment so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks all
Mike

Hi all,

After lots of reading I went out yesterday and took over a 100 pics using the manual modes on the camera. I have tried to upload a couple of pics with out success.

I am shooting in high quality jpeg, then taking card out of camera and putting straight in to lap top. Then trying to upload, and its just not working.

Any advice please.

Thank you
Mike

Hi Bindi

I bought the camera from pc world, as it was the best price I could find new, other than imports on e-bay. And yes the salesman did try to sell me extended warranty. I did refuse.
He did not have to do much selling though as I have been looking at what I should buy as my first dslr for months now, and he could not tell me any thing about the camera I had not read some where, other than frighten me about dust,LOL.

cant argue for £5 at least you didnt have to wait for delivery.

When you say upload, do you mean to the computer or the web? Silly question but i had to ask.

When you put the card in the laptop, you should get a window pop up asking you what you want to do. If not just go into C/: look for a removable card icon or it might say EOSdrive or similar. Open it up and drag the contents to a location of your choice (desktop is easiest). If you do get a pop up window, the just choose view files and follow the steps above.

Thats an old fashioned way to do it but it should eliminate the possibility of third-party issues, like importing software etc...

Hi Addy

I meant upload to this site, I am having problems, I have tried to upload a couple of pics a few times now. It just wont have it. I get a message saying upload in progress and after a few minutes it stops and goes back to original screen.

Mike, You were asking about a longer lens. I just grabbed a Canonn 55-200mm for our 450d training camera and I'm very pleasantly suprised by the image quality. As a resaleable stepping stone on the way to something a little more serious I think it's ideal, much better than the 75-300 which several people have brought along.

I paid £145 delivered brand new in white box from digigood on Fleabay.
