New Editing/CFD PC Build

I have been wanting to build a new pc for editing for a while but haven't been able to justify it but for my final year project at uni I need a better pc than I have access to at uni so am buying myself a powerful pc :)

It looks like it will consist of these parts when I order it tomorrow morning.

Case: Silverstone TJ08B-E
Mobo : Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z
CPU : Intel I7 2700k
CPU Cooler : Noctua NH-U12P SE2 (Plan on overclocking the CPU)
Ram : 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 (Need 16gb for the uni stuff)
OS HDD : 60GB Corsair Force Series 3
Data HDD : 2TB Hitachi Deskstar
PSU : Antec True Power New 650W

+ card reader + dvdrw drive + windows 7 home premium

for now just using intel graphics hd 3000 and if its not good enough I will get a proper card when I have money again!

While I am fairly confident I want these parts, if anyone has any comments that would be great :)

Built mine a few weeks ago and very happy with the same RAM and PSU as you with the 2600K.

Used the 120Gb version of the Corsair SSD too.

Your Mobo seems to be the fastest of the P67 boards as well.

I was going to get a p67 mATX board but this one has a usb3 header so the front ports will be usb3 which doesn't matter at the moment but I am sure I will soon own some usb3 stuff so it will be very beneficial then

Have to say I'd go larger on the SSD. I'm using 41G of a 90G (84G formatted) at the moment. A 60G drive is not only likely to be half the channels of a 120G drive (so lower performance) but once formatted will be ~55G.

P67 has a USB3 header, well what I call an internal socket on the mobo for USB3.

I use it for extra USB3 sockets to rear of PC.

Surely it depends on the case design, whether you can have the front sockets USB3?

Ha, you know what you're right... I'm being a dumbass and thinking of the gigabyte I had before the asus..

Well my asus p8p67 board must be newer than yours, because it definitely has an internal USB3 socket and it ships with a two socket doodah to fit in the rear of the PC.

Are you sure you're talking about the same P8P67? There are at least half a dozen variants...

i have got a Crucial 64GB Real SSD C300 2.5inch and ive used about 40gb so have about 20gb left whice i cant see i will ever fill, i have alot of stuff on at the moment like cs4,ps,pse7and 10,lr3,capture nx2,corel paint shop x,phase 1,lots of other photo stuff,+ lots of other stuff,
but for sure start up times are defo quicker got 64 bit on the sdd, and in the same computer 32bit on a normal hdd,
 
Install windows normally first, reduce the size of the windows partition.

Install Linux to the free space, I use ubuntu

Install grub to the MBR

Then from grub you can boot either into windows or into linux, I have changed my grub settings to boot into windows by default and have no time limit so I don't accidentally boot into the wrong OS when I turn my pc on and forget I need to select the OS I want

You can also do it by installing grub to a partition and using the windows boot loader to boot into grub

Thanks. Linex is something i must look into.
 
mines the rev 3.0 P8P67-M Pro and definately has no USB3 internal headers. just the rear sockets.

I missed the "-M" bit on your post, mines is ASUS P8P67 PRO REV 3.1

I kinda assumed that REV 3 were the ones that had all the SATA problems but obviously not.

and why my old laptop was no where near powerful enough, 2 CFD simulations running taking up this many resources, large image so only a link to it: http://www.masterplan-photography.co.uk/imgview/pc/screenshot.png

so pleased with it, its currently running at 4.2GHz and during simulations when all the threads are at 100% the processor is stable at 62ish degrees. For building 3D models what my laptop took a day to maybe fail at this pc does in 2mins. CPU-Z Validation: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2135710

Obviously too much space for routing, I hated that PSU and cables with a vengeance!
