Hi everyone,
new lad here, from the north east and looking to buy a digital slr, used to take a lot of pics at croft with my 2 trusty pentax,s( p30 and p30t) and a few cheap lenses, enjoyed it lots but it all got a bit expensive and other things in life took over( land rovers mainly).
So i,m in the market for a new slr, i have a lumix pocket camera but they are limited in performance, im drawn towards the conon eos 550d, it seams to punch well above its weight in performance for the money, i can get a decent deal at jessops, the camera body, a 18-55 dc lens and a canon 75-300 dc lens with the option of canon 50mm f/1.8 mk11 lens for an extra £50, making the whole lot just under £500, about what i have to spend.
Anyone tell me the pro,s and cons of this combo, should i wait untill after xmass untill the 2013 models come out and see if i can get a better deal ?.
Im not really any good at taking pics but enjoy it and want a decent, reliable easy(ish) to use camera, that can take a bit of punishment when i,m out off roadiing (1972 land rovers arnt known for there comfort !),

Hi and welcome. I can highly recommend the Canon 550D body as it was the first one I bought and is an excellent performer. I finally sold it recently (but I'd kept hold of it even when I had a 5D MkII and a 7D because it was so good) as I bought the wife a 650D and it wasn't getting used anymore. The 18-55 IS II is also a cracker of a lens, it's nice and sharp and is a good performer for a 'kit' lens. The same goes for the 50 f1.8 II as well, it's not very well built but if you look after it then it'll serve you well.

The only part of your plan that will let you down is the 75-300 lens. It's probably the worst lens Canon has ever made IMO. No doubt there will be some people who will come on later and show you some good shots taken with it but it's the only lens I've ever had that I didn't get any keepers from. If you can find a deal that includes the Canon 55-250 IS II lens instead then I'd suggest you go for that. You lose 50mm of the length but the IQ from the lens is fantastic for the price. You can pick them up for around £100 second hand and for the price they are fantastic. You'll find lots of posts on here that extol the virtue of this lens but I doubt you'll find many decent reviews of the 75-300.

Dave, you mentioned using old Pentax cameras. If you still have any of the old lenses have a look at the Pentax K30.

It is getting good reviews,
is weather sealed,
image stabilisation is in the camera body so all lenses no matter how old are stabilised,
old Pentax K mount lenses will fit, and

a K30 + the kit lens and a spare battery can be had for £449 from a well know Watford dealer. There is also £50 cashback bringing total down to less than £400.

Even if you don't have any old K mount lenses, it is still a good deal.
 
Thanx for the replies, when i called in to jessops for a nose around the pentax man latched on to me and tried his hardest with the k30, thing is it felt a bit plastiky, the canon seems to feel right.
I think i,ll wait a few week,s and see what sort of deal i can eek out, i,m sure there is something out the to suite my needs,

Well i still havnt bought anything, BUT my budget has increased to £600-650, BUT thats all i have, i take it i,m gona need a memory card aswell.
Think i,ll try and get a deal on the 18-55 is II lens and the 55-250 is II, but i,m kinda impatient and fancy a look out t,morro, wish me luck,

aaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhh, thought i had it sorted, new what i wanted, was gonna go n have a mooch about tmorro for the 550d, didnt want the 75-300 lens but thought i,d go and see what i could find, then in the local shop today and notice "what digital camera" on the shelf so i bought it.
Flicking through and found an advert for curry,s pc world, they are doing the caanon 600d, 18-55 efs lens, free remote and a spare battery for just under £440.
So is the 600 any better than the 550, i noticed all the adverts in the mag are missing the 550, looks like noebody is selling it other than jessops at the min,

Curry's really are amazing on prices of lots of electrical stuff at the moment. I bought a new desktop PC for the wife for Xmas with an excellent spec. Checked it through my computer expert at work and he couldn't get a better specced one at the corporate rate/site for the money.

More pertinently, bought the Fuji 18mm lens at a better price than I could find anywhere on high street or web. And got in a long conversation with the sales guy who was heavily into photography.
 
I think the 600D has a few desirable features over the 550D - a few creative options like toy camera, fisheye, and a wireless flash option ( I think you have to get an adaptor for the 550D). It also has the articulated screen, if you like that idea.

I have a 550D and think its great, but would have quite liked those extra features - not too fussed about the screen articulating, but some people love it.
 
Thanx for the reply,s, currys are also doing a deal if you buy the 600, you get the 55-250 lens for just under £200, the i found on ebay a new canon ef-s 55-250mmf4-5.6 is markII for £118.99, sounds like a bargin, item no 170892766380, and thats with free delivery, does that seem too good to be true ,
why,s nothing ever easy

BIG sigh of relief, done it, went out this afternoon and bought the 600d, camera, 18-55 f3.5-5.6 is II, romote control, and two battery,s£469.99 but will get 40 cash back, just orderd a canon ef-s 55-250 f4-5.6 is mkII lens for £118.99, got a 32gb class 10 memory card on its way, HAPPY , now just have to work out how it all work,s. . . . . . . . . .
