Good evening, I'm hoping someone can kindly offer me some advice;

I today received the 400D I purchased from a member here (which was in fantastic condition, and boxed like new! Thanks Kalph) - All I have is the standard Kit 18-55 II lens.

I've been trying to play with Depth Of Field without too good results, the manual tells me to go into AV mode and adjust the aperture, however, I've tried many different apertures, and had no luck.

Can anyone point me to a guide, or is it really obvious where I'm going wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

got any examples you can post up? DOF varies with focal length, aperture and distance to subject so it's not too easy to answer without something to look at :)

first two are at really small apertures, F16 and F18 which means you're going to have a greater depth of field. Try two shots of the remote control, from the same position and try F5.6 and F16 and you should see the difference.

Compose a quick picture, like your first one on flickr, and focus on the vase. This pic has a foreground (the vase) and background (the door). Use an aperture of 2.8. Then take the same picture, focussing still on the vase with the aperture set at say 16. These 2 extremes should enable you to see the difference. Then you can play with all the inbetweens!

Good advice apart from F2.8, it's the kit lens :)

A wide angle lens will give you more depth of field - you used 18mm on the second shot.
Try again with a longer focal length and large aperture (small f number)
