Nikon D4s White Balance- Quick Advice

Took my new(to me) D4s out for a spin yesterday just shooting some sport in overcast/rainy conditions.
Obviously still getting to grips with it but I shot in auto white balance as I did with the old D3 and despite the extremely samey lighting over the period of about an hour some images were a lot warmer than others.
I know there is the easy answer of manually configuring the white balance/sorting it in post but am just wondering as to why the camera managed to interpret the light so differently in the occasional shot?

Anyone any ideas?

Since WB is the less critical parameter to set prior to
SR, and so easy to fix in PP, I recommend to set it on
Auto WB.

Nikon has a very clever way to get things right most of
the time and, in any case, tweaking WB in PP, from the
recorded values, is done in a jiffy!

Yes I have always taken the same approach, I found it weird though that this camera got it wrong in fairly basic conditions- its almost like it over thought it.

Would you supply examples?

These two. For me the first one is what I saw for 70% of the shots and the second one is it going a bit more yellow.

Yes, I see but this second take is rendered far too dark
(as is the first!) and this alone will exacerbate any colour
cast. Just adjusting the exposure values (DRL) solves a
lot of it, sampling the WB from the grey building, far back,
will finalize the tweak. May I suggest…
