Yes
I am in the mind to get a Nikon DX 24mm prime F mount lens.
How can I tell what is DX or FX unless the seller tells me and if its not actually printed on the lens.?

Japan, on E bay I see a lot of things on there from Japan, have any of you purchased any thing from Japan on E bay and how was the experience, good bad worth it or not?

I'm not aware of a 24mm F mount DX lens, but a 24mm F mount lens will work perfectly, with a few exceptions, the older D lenses were screw driven, not all
Nikon DSLR's will work with these lenses.
I've purchased many items from Japan, and never had a problem.

Yes bought 4 lenses from Japan for my Panasonic G9II MFT camera. couple of things to watch out for
1= check it is not a "stock "photo some use, check to see if shown on another slellers sites
2= examine the picture carefully special attention to the lens glass
3= go for advertised as mint or near mint. All mine are near mint so what is the difference as they look like new
4 =Mint comes usually with box and paperwork
5 = Near mint usually doesn't
6 =check the description they are very honest with it
7= if comes with a box check the version number or if its stamped on the lens
8 = Don't forget import duty ie VAT and carrier costs may add to the final bill

Finally from my experience Japan is my first port of call, never been disapointedeven with " Near Mint" Honestly I could not tell from new.
Having been to Japan to loose what they call "loose face" is something they avoid or they are in disgrace, Which is a terrible sin in Japan. Hence their accuracy in describing a lens

To gve you some idea of cost saving against "new" here in the UK bearing in mind the Japanes lenses are used. But point out very hard to from new, I save about £1000 on the four lenses

I am surprised, I have no idea what to do about that but I don't want to click on the link

all you have to do is click on report (bottom left) in that post and a box come on another screen so you can say whatever.

All the lenses I got are like that, just follow my 1-8 advice

It is no longer there now.

Yes I want a wider angle lens that will work with a D3100 and or a D70s
The D3100 I like, the D70s I like more, I have far better results with it.
An idea I have is to go into town and photograph some of the older parts of the city, lots of churches and ornate building which I think would make good subjects.
Prefer the D70s so a lens that will work with it would suit.

The D70s you'll be able to use the older D series lenses as well as the later Silent wave lenses, however you're not going to be able to use the D series lenses on the D3100, as that body can't autofocus with the older screw drive lenses, just to point out the 24mm on a DX body will give you the field of view of a 36mm lens

Nikon only make 24mm lenses in FX. The 24mm 1.8 is really nice. It is very sharp and pretty small for a wide angle lens. Used, they go for £2-300.

If you don't need a 1.8 aperture then a 17-50 zoom might be more useful. The Sigma 17-50 2.8 is very nice and will be as sharp above f/4. The Nikon 17-50 2.8 is well rated (not as sharp) but feels too big on anything smaller than a D300.

Reading between the lines a bit here but it sounds like you may want wider than 24mm. 24mm is a wide angle lens on a full frame/35mm film camera but not particularly wide on an APSC DSLR like yours. To get equivalent, you'll want about 16mm. A couple of options that immediately spring to mind that might be right in the sort of range you're looking for are the Nikon 12-24mm or my favourite, the Tokina 11-16mm. The nikon has more range but only f/4. The Tokina is a 2.8. Both really nice IMO.

With the Tokina, I think you'd want the DX ii version like the one linked there to get auto focus on your D3100.

BTW most Nikon Dx lenses are cheap now. Fantastically so actually so I'd argue that there is very little to be saved from importing from Japan. Worth checking but I would think at this end of the market, it's not worth it.

Get an 18-55

Outstanding lens equivalent to24 mm short end.

Cheap as chips

Pedantic I know but it's more like 27/28mm which is quite big difference at wider angles.

I thought that it is 1.5x on crop sensor.

My bad maths

My bad maths

It’s 1.5 to 1.6 ish depending on camera. 1.5 is generally used as it makes the maths much easier but the d3100 crop factor is 1.56. So 18mm is 27mm or 28mm depending on which you use. 1.5 is close enough and makes life easier.

Is there not a 1.3x on that body?
