I have a d700 and would like something around the 24mm focal length that I can pair with my 50mm when I want to travel light. I have the Nikon 24-70 2.8 which I love but it's a beast to carry all day. The 24mm would also hopefully serve as a decent landscape lens and a back up should something go wrong with the 24-70.

What are my options. I really like the look of the 24mm 1.4 but that's a lot of money, so was thinking the 24mm 2.8d would suit. Are there any other wide primes I could consider.

Focal lengths between 20mm - 28mm
Must auto focus
Between £200 and £300 used.

The only Nikon lenses within budget are the 24mm 2.8 or the 28mm 2.8 I think, the latter being cheaper and less favoured. I have just got the 24mm 2.8 and it seems a fine lens for the money. There's the new 28mm 1.8G but that's quite pricey.
 
I had the 24mm 2.8D for a while. Got it for the same reasons. Bit of a disappointment; not pin sharp anywhere, and soft at the borders and corners. Maybe I got a bad copy.
My conclusion after much searching, is that to go wider than 28mm on full frame (for which the Tamron 28-75mm does a damn good job), costs a lot.
 
My 24mm is adequately sharp wide open, though I've not studied the borders.
 
The new 28mm 1.8g gets rave reviews..but is above your price range. The older 24/28 get mixed reviews it seem, some people love them others not so much.

I had been temped to dich my 24-70 for primes, a 35 and something wider. The only one I could see that wasn't silly money and got good reviews was the 28G but I thought that may be abut to close to the 35 so have held off for now.

I would save some more cash and if the 28is wide enough get that.
 
I have owned numerous 24mm primes over the decades.
But currently I,m using 2 Sigma len's the AF 24mm f1:1.8 and the old Manual Focus 24mm f1:2.8 Ais Super Wide II.
And both produce excellent results.
I owned the Nikon AFD 24mm f2.8 which again was a good performer but not as good as the earlier AF non D version was for some reason.
Have you looked at the used s/h market there are some bargains to be had.
If you want something a little wider Sigma have a AF 20mm f1:1.8 and Nikon a AF 20mm f1:2.8.
Spoilt for choice now I guess?
 
I've heard mixed things about the Nikon 24mm f2.8D I've just ordered to go with my D7000, I wanted to cover off the potential of going full frame later while also having a more "walkaround" prime for my D7000 but I can see it going back based on the comments I've read about it.

Don't be put off by what you read.
Even Nikon have the odd one creep past QC
A lot of people are under the impression that every lens, camera and piece of equipment are individually tested, and that is not the case.
They will pull only the odd one or two off the production line for testing.
On a DX crop camera you will only be using the so called sweet spot so it probably won't show any fault.
It might well be worth doing a few shots with a FX camera should you know anyone who has one.
 
On a tight budget, the Cosina lens mentioned is worth considering. It was also marketed under the Vivitar brand IIRC and possibly others.

The Sigma 12-24 is another option and is insanely wide on FF! As with all lenses, try before you buy - QC issues have been known.
 
Youmay just get a 20 F2.8 Nikkor Af for your budget. I know it's an obvious choice, but it's great on my D300s.Just now looking for a proper FF body to put it on!
