Odd SD Card issue

No
have a 32gb SDHC class 10 transcend SD card. its worked faultlessly for ages now. and up until about 2 weeks ago was fine.
now though it seems to have developed some weird problem.
it works fine in the camera and fine if camera is attached to the PC via usb and can read the data off it ( cant cut images though only copy them and it says its protected as well even though lock is open on it ).

thought it might be my card reader slot on laptop so tried 2 external card readers. one it works in to a point but still says its right protected when i try to format it.
the other reader wont even see it.
tested it in wifes laptop again it comes up and gets seem straight away and i can format it no problems.

so i tried a 16gb kingston card in my laptop. and that appears straight away and i can format it. and works fine in both card readers.

so for some unknown reason the 32gb transcend which worked a couple of weeks ago no longer wants to play ball on my computer via either usb card reader or the built in card reader all of which work fine with other cards.
when it gets put into the built in card reader it doesnt even get seen. yet the other card pops up as normal straight away so i cant see how it can be the reader itself.

confused!

Throw it away!

My view on it is if was shooting a wedding and put it in by mistake and couldn't get images I'd be nackered! It's a small price to pay for a new cards

that really doesnt help... and the sd card works perfectly fine on the wifes laptop. but for some reason on mine its showing as write protected. so can only guess the issue lies with windows

Is it only the one card that does it?

Dirty contacts or worn away? The spring contacts might not all make contact so it's not fully reading it

Clean contacts and try again

yep only one card. but only on my laptop. works fine in other laptop. i can even format it as i please. yet in mine it wont even see it. yet my laptop see's 3 other cards with no problems.. thats what doesnt make sense... how can the darn thing not appear . one thing solved is that the external USB reader is write protecting the card as default as its doing it with my kingston sd card yet if i put the kingston card in the built in card reader its unprotected.
the second external one i have the kingston shows unprotected so must be something built into one of the card readers i have.
however it still wont show in the external sd slot even though every other card does and even though it works fine on other laptops. driving me insane trying to figure out how it can work in one but not the other

yeah it worked around 2 weeks ago.. and ive had the card for a couple of years now ( hasnt been used past year as ive not used camera due to surgery ) but took some shots around 2-3 weeks ago with it. put it in sd card as per normal and like always before adobe LR opens up and card gets read straight away. odd thing is it does exactly that on the wifes laptop. and all other sd cards work fine on my laptop so cant fathom how it can work fine on the wifes yet wont work on mine when everything else will.
ive just tried changing the drivers for the sd card slot on my laptop to see if that helps. but it wont even get seen. it only sees the card in the card reader then tells me it needs formatting but if you try to format it it gives error.. whatever the fault is seems to be combination of the card and my laptop which makes no sense when seperatly the two work fine.

What Gramps and Mark said. If you format it in the camera and it still misbehaves then throw it. Formatting in a computer is generally not the best idea.

not trying to format it in computer im trying to see it. purchased a replacement today but still doesnt change the fact theres no reason why it should work and appear in laptop A but not in laptop B when every other SD card works in Laptop B.

just very frustrating .

I have two SD cards that won't play ball with my windows 7 machine, turned out it was an update for USB3 drivers

yeah i do wonder if its driver issue of some kind. though the laptop has built in sd card reader ( jmicron drivers ) ive tried installing them from original disk and still not working so may try and find some alternative ones.
bloody useless windows.

Doubt it's software. Much more likely that manufacturing tolerances in the card reader means it's showing a fault in one

yes ive formatted in camera taken test shots, can view the test shots in camera, can view them and see the card via USB if its left in the camera, can access the card in SD card reader on wifes laptop. but on my laptop its not even regersting in 2 external USB readers and the built in one. even though they are all working when tested with 2 other cards.
laptop is a dell xps 1702 and card reader seems to be jmicron controlelr with generic drivers and as said until couple of weeks ago had no isses reading the sd card ( transcend ) works fine with the kingston and samsung SD cards )

To me it sounds like the fault is on your laptop.
it does seem that way but doesnt explain why the other cards work on it. makes no darn sense.. 32gb card as well sighhh. oh well budget doesnt stretch to a new laptop so a new samsung evo 32gb on way to me. hopefully have no problems with that

I had a similar issue a few years ago with a Kingston card that did not like my then windows laptop, gave it to my mate who had the same l/top as me and it worked fine for him for years.
Funny thing electronics.

thats whats odd its worked fine in my laptop for past couple of years. i even resorted to seeing if it would work in linux mint but still no go yet the missus has a dell laptop as well and it pops up in a flash on hers with no problems. whats even more bizarre is why it wont work in the usb card readers either. funnily enough i had same problem on this laptop in 2012 ( found an old post on dell forums.. somehow got it working again but no idea how lol

As others have said, recommend binning the card or use it for something else.

It's not work the risk or hassle of losing a days photos.

I had an issue similar to @lcee with a class 10 Kingston card where the actual read and write speeds were lower than class 10, and also lower than my Transcend class 6 cards at the time.

Sent it back to Kingston and the replacement had the same issue; the card was genuine but I put it down to some driver/controller compatibility issue. I just stopped using that card in my camera.

had an odd problem on my imac where cards weren't recognised. It turned out to be dust in the reader. Try cleaning the reader. also check the little tab isn't floating so it ends up in the wrong place.

My macbook was intermittently not registering a card in the SD slot and sometimes it would take a few inserts before it would find it. I was also having glitches with the graphics at the time - the guy on the helpline said it could have been related - since getting a new logic board, it's been fine... although I need another new logic board now, but that's another story.

Could be a windows update that may have caused an issue.

Have a look at this :
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/976422

And this

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4247

If they are already installed, try removing them.
did try to install them from links but says this update is not applicable they arent listed in add/ remove programs and cant seem to find any way to remove them either.

still think its an issue with my laptop which only a clean install of windows will resolve ( its been 3 years or more so its due for a fresh install as its getting sluggish and for an 8gb ram i7 it should be runnign alot quicker ).
if i still have issues when the new 32gb card arrives next week then its out with the win 7 disk

well the new crard arrived ( samsung evo and its very fast too ). works perfectly. so its not an issue with reading 32gb cards.
the old one still works perfectly in wifes laptop so still at a loss , unless its some weird windows update thats caused the problem.

Did you click on "view installed updates" on the left hand side when you went into add/remove programs?

yeah and that one wasnt listed eitehr and no way to search for them by the code that i can find. very odd. also though the new card is seen fine and reports full capacity

I've had files I wanted to delete not show up under add/remove but ccleaner saw them and killed them no problem. If you don't have ccleaner you could download it and give it a go as it's free. Don't know if deleting and reinstalling will cure the problem but if it's free to do you might as well give it a try and IMVHO ccleaner is a good thing to have.

ive got cc but still not listed there. running win 7 home edition , dont know if a registry search would find the file , tried windows index search and no joy either and googling about uninstalling seems to be a bit of a headache too

ive got a 64gb card that loves to remove the "cut" thing from the menue, i dont know why it does it. its related to the pc or pcs though

in that case - I would log onto the manufactures website and download the latest usb3.0 drivers and card reader drivers.... something has updated.

a quicker way would be to go into device manager, click on the item goto the the driver tab and see if rollback driver is available. Might just work.

sometimes the latest update via windows update for drivers is not always the best driver to use.
