#1 and #2 are 100% crops. Or should I say digitally zoomed in a Leica thread ? ;)

Digitally zooming has its limitations with a low res camera, as picture #4 above shows, which is upscaled from 500K.

More than 100% crops (zooms) one should avoid, I think.

Which makes me think about buying a higher res camera. Currently, my SONYs A7R2 and the NIKON D850 are my maxima.

A low(er) cost high res Camera like the SONY A7R4 with 60MP and the same sensor as the LEICA Q3 (with a Black Friday price) could be tempting, perhaps ...

Hi, should you or shouldn't you ... :

Reflections for a rainy day ...

Question regarding help.

Should I sell my Sony gear so that I can get myself the Leica Q3 ? It’s my dream camera and has been for some while now. Unfortunately the pockets cannot accommodate both, literally. I love street photography.

The Q3 is an excellent camera and as long as you can cope with 28mm FOV then it would be welled suited to your intended purpose. (You also have a number of crop options available).

The shooting experience with the Q3 is sublime, there is just nothing to get in the way of “the photography”. I’m finding the lack of function buttons a benefit (nothing to fiddle with!) and the tactile handling is excellent.

The phase detect AF is fast (much faster than previous generation Q series cameras with contrast detect only)

The only (other than the cost!!) downside is that the rear screen only tilts in the horizontal - this is minor but after coming from cameras with multi directional tilt on the rear screen it can be a bit of a pain at times.

I don’t regret buying mine and I’ve ended up selling an X100F and most of my GFX kit to fund it.

Hi, looking at your equipment list in your footer, you do not only do street photography.

You might ask yourself, what you give up for the excellent Q3 as an only camera ...

Hi, another option is a SONY A7R4, which is said to have the same sensor as the Q3.

But I do not have either of them. So, I cannot give a recommendation based on personal experience.

My highest res cameras are the SONY A7R2 and the NIKON D850 ... ---

You may find 28mm quite restrictive - pity that you cannot try one first

This may be interesting if you want to compare the "crop" sizes, (MP's) of the Q3 versus the Q3 43, (although it was written before the new 43 was launched) - depends how many MP's you want or need ............ and if you do choose the 60MP sensor, do you need to upgrade your computer so that you can process the images at an acceptable speed - (noting that the 60MP sensor creates (very large) 100Mbte files.

The main "difference" as I see it in using the Q in crop mode is that the DOF in every "crop" will be the DOF you get with a 28mm lens, just magnified in, versus say using a 50mm or 75mm lens on a FF Nikon when the DOF will be that of using the 50 or 75 lens.

Hi, I find the concept of zooming digitally rather funny, or more of a case of Advanced Marketingese.

Car makers shut down cylinders to save fuel, so they could say:

With this V8 car, you get three cars - a V8, a V6 and a V4.

They could make a business case: the V8 is 100000 €, a V6 is 80000 € and a V4 is 40000 €.

So, by buying the V8 customers save 20000 € (or get 3 cars).

Wouldn't it be easy to do business with gullible customers? ---

For the Leica Qs I would say: With a high res sensor and an excellent lens, you can crop with good results. ---

But sorry, I am out of my depth. I am just the humble hobby photographer justpix, only taking pics ...

Hi, referring to the carmakers, above. They could even say We are digitally flexibly downsizing (to meet Green objectives) ... ---

I should have gone into the car industry ...;)

Hi, on digital zoom, again.

Is it a feature without a future, or could it even be something new, to stay ?

From my HW point of view - one lens per FL - originated my criticism above.

But in IT we have the concept of SDF - software defined functionality.

Which we also have in photography in the form of film looks.

So, one could see digital zooming as basic lens looks.

A 90mm zoom on the Q3 still leads to files of 5,8 MB, which is more than my first digicam had, uncropped.

Cameramakers could follow this development trend, offering dedicated lens looks, which would require lenses with very neutral rendering
as the basis for a Sonnar Look or Elmarit Look, and others ...

However, an industry question is then, who does the lens looks? The cameramakers inside the cam, to compensate for fewer lens sales ?

Or in post, by the ADOBEs et al ? They would love additional software features, and sales, making the cameramakers mere hardware suppliers.

We shall see ... ---

Easier for a humble hobby photographer like me ... (M9 - VOIGTLÄNDER Apo-Lanthar 2/50 f 2) :
