Amy, I think you'll be better off using P for expsoure setting. Some people believe that using manual will allow you to do things that are not possible in P, aperture priority or shutter priority. This isn't true. There is only one 'correct' exposure setting for a given level of light and you can set that by which ever method is most convenient, but they all end up delivering the same basic exposure.
