"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Evening all. Not been posting much of late but thought I'd let you all know about a good deal on the Panasonic 14mm f2.5. Just taken delivery of one from FotoSense - brand new, split from GF2 kits for £180 delivered. Bargain! Anyhoo, my lightweight, old-skool back to basics mountain picture taking machine is now complete:

The optical viewfinder is a Ricoh GV-2, conveniently a 4:3 format finder with a 28mm FOV in 35mm terms. Pretty much the perfect partner to the 14mm! Virtually brand new and £30 from eBay!!

Well, my G series owning days are over :'( G2 has been sold to fund another camera and the lenses are up in the for sale forum. I think I was spoiled with the GF1, should never have sold it, going to the G1 then G2 got me away from what m43 was all about. I might get another GF1 in the future, but for now, the X1 goes everywhere with me.

I will keep popping back to see how " the family" is getting on though.

Hi, wondering if anyone can offer some advice..... I am interested in adding some older lenses to my G2, possibly a macro lens or a 50mm lens. I know in order to do this i need to buy an adapter but was interested in any opinions on what would be a good system to go for? I only want to experiment so I am really looking for a system that I can get a variety of lenses at a good price. Someone has mention the Canon FD's, any thoughts?

Yes, as 50mms go, Canon's are inferior to Zuiko and Nikon ones. For Macro you might want to look at something like the Tamron, Tokina or Vivitar 90mm f2.8s which weere all very good.
 
I've posted about it quite a few times, but the Canon FD 50mm 3.5 Macro is excellent imo. There was a thread on dpreview with some of the best macro pics I've ever seen taken with it on a GF1.

Dudie - the 14mm is very tempting, just wish it was 12mm!

I was hoping you guys could just advise me on something, I'm pretty new to photography so don't shoot me.

I'm thinking of buying the lumix 20mm pancake lens, everyone seems to be raving about it and the results look great. Whats the difference though between the 14mm H-H014 and the 20mm pancake H-H020?

Price on fotosense seems for the 14mm pancake is really cheap though! Which should I go for though?

As far as I can see the 14mm is f2.5, the 20mm is f1.7.

Forgive me if you know all this stuff and are not a beginner...

The 14mm gives a wider field of view than the 20mm but the 20mm has a wider aperture which means that you can maintain a higher shutter speed in low light and isolate your subject more with a nice out of focus background.

The 20mm is blisteringly nice. If you want to shoot landscapes, the 14mm might be a better choice. If you're going to take pictures of anything else, I'd strongly suggest the 20mm. Did I mention that the 20mm is spectacular. :D

I would say I am beginning as an SLR photographer! but I've been a keen point and shooter for a while! Been using a G2 for about 3 months now..

I had noted the difference in aperture sizes but didn't really understand what the 17mm lens had to offer and couldn't really find a lot of info on it (I had wondered whether it was a successor to the 20mm.

So yes the low light capabilities of the 20mm pancake is what I'm after. Time to pick one up now!

The GH1 has a bigger sensor and better AF system, but with a slightly bigger body, and the GH's are top of the Panasonic range for a reason.
 
GH has better everything, but JPEG output is still carp. You need to use raw to get the best from it.
 
moons seem to be everywhere tonight on the forums so as it's my first photo share i thought i'd hide it here!

i was quite pleased for a first effort with my 45-200 on a g1. any comments? please be gentle.

anyone using any fisheye's or does anyone have the 8mm lumix g fisheye? Really expensive though.

Anyone got any advice regarding fisheye's?

That's mighty fine that! :thumbs: It rained here, so no moon shots from me. Plenty of Rally ones though, because you can't do motrosport with m4/3!
 
Everything that could go wrong for my rally shoot did, It rained, I somehow managed to fluff the location I wanted (or there was a last minute rute change), the 2nd flash arrived dead, so I had to wing it with just a YN560 on camera. I had to race to a backup location that I didn't want to use since it was a) a poorer location anyway and b) a very unpredictable location as for how the cars were going to behave.

Oh and I decided that for a laugh, I'd let the camera AF in the dark. Which works well, as long as it's not a white car. if it's red it works very well.

I need some more practice but the equipment is more than up to the task.

You can compare these to a proper Pro's work at this gallery. I have a fair few speedsports photos on my wall (from mine and Dad's competition days)

Yeah I did see that, looks like it could be quite nifty, any word on when it will be released?

No not yet:shrug:. Sigma have also said they will be doing lens for m4/3 but no word on what yet.

Thanks. It was really clear here luckily. It wasn't as easy as I thought it'd be to capture. I might have another go in a few days when its waxing. I've got a nifty app for my HTC which tells me what the moon is doing, so I'll wait till a bit disappears and then start again.
 
Think I'm going to go back to using my g1 as my main camera after a few months with the gf1. The main reason being I am getting really into macro and finding it hard to focus with the screen. Keep the gf1 as a 2nd body.
 
The 14-42 hasn't got as good a reputation as the older 14-45 but i had no complaints about mine.
 
The 14-42 is a bit lighter than the 14-45. It has a plastic mount as opposed to the 45's metal mount and it doesnt have the OIS switch on the side, so switching OIS on and off is done in the menus, which can be a bit of a nuisance if you need to switch it quickly.
I had both lenses and the 14-45 produced sharper images at the longer end and of course gave you a little more reach. At 14mm, both seemed the same and both were very sharp there.

Thanks for the comments. I am almost certainly going to get a GH2 with 14-42 and was just wondering if the lens is ok or so crappy I would need a better one straight off, like with some of the SLR kit lenses I have had. Sounds like it will do just fine though.

I seem to remember a comparison showing the 14-45 is better wide open, but they seem to be pretty much the same generally.

How does your GF1 compare to the 7D for general use?
 
It's a bit on the steep side. I might have to get one of those later. Looks like a nice lens though.

Well, it's a different beast of course. The AF is the main difference, 7D is very fast, GF1 is a bit sluggish but perfectly fine for most uses. High ISO is quite a lot better on the 7D. There's not much in it in terms of IQ at lower ISOs imo, though you get a lot more MP on the 7D for cropping or huge prints. I have printed 30x20" from my GF1 though and had no complaints with the quality.

The GF1 is just a great little camera to take with you all the time, especially on those occasions when you would feel self conscious with a big camera. With the 20mm lens you have a very small package that handles nicely and is capable of great IQ. I've never found the lack of a VF a problem apart from in very bright sunshine, though some don't like it at all.

TBH if it wasn't for the fact I am trying to start up a photography business I'm not sure I would have bothered getting a DSLR.
