Happy new year all! As we're talking turbo's at the moment....
Do I really need a different wheel or tyre while using one of these -
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/

Swapping the wheel and Garmin speed sensor is a bit of a pain every time. Will I do much, if any, damage to the wheel/tyre? The turbo doesn't have resistance levels it's all dependent on my gears so I'm thinking there will be less wear than on a normal trainer?
Advice appreciated. I'm realistically only going to be doing 5-10 miles a day when I can't get outside.

I haven't got a trainer so don't take this as gospel, I think the issue comes with soft compound tyres that are under inflated and possibly under too much pressure against the roller causing the tyre to over heat. I know lots of cyclists in our club who never change the tyre or wheel over before a session, but some do also use a trainer tyre which has a really hard compound

I started using my Tacx trainer with my regular Schwalbe One (summer) tyre, and after a couple of sessions had a covering of black dust around the trainer where it had worn the tyre.

At £25-£30 a pop, I wasn't keen to wear them out when I managed to pick up a tacx turbo tyre for £15 on Amazon which isn't wearing down, and is a little quieter as well. I put it on the old original rear wheel that came with the bike with the extra rotational weight a benefit when I'm training. So I switch rear wheels between indoor and outdoor sessions and the more I do it the faster I'm getting at it !

You don't *need* to. But for a variety of reasons you might choose to.

Exactly my experience and I also find the trainer tyre 'smoother' and quieter.

Thanks Dalton, I saw that but they're out of stock

I've just sent Evans a price match request anyway, see what they say. I'm tempted by Amazon.italy but for ease of returns if there's a problem I think I'll stick with Evans

Gregg, if you're not in a massive rush, Wiggle tend to get deliveries every 2-4 weeks. When I wanted to order mine it was out of stock and said 6-8 weeks but was back in stock in less than two weeks. You can set up an email alert and then a price match (I did my comparison with bikediscount.de) and they replied/I ordered within 6 hours (y)

you get a cinch or standard spider.

fitted it yet?

fitted an oval ring and a 160mm airshaft to my pikes, need to trim rear Zee hose.

Yeah swapping the crank out was easy, RF bottom bracket uses the same tool as the Shimano. Then just a big 8mm Allen to attach the drive side to the shaft.

Not got a pic of the bars but 785 from 720 wide is going to take a little getting used to.

Think that's it completely finished now, might actually get some time off when there aren't random lakes appearing from nowhere to actually ride it.

didn't realise you got a patrol -bro inlaw got one last year, runs 11sp XT since this pic was taken. runs 800mm spank spike vibrocore

Shameless plug but if any of you guys are looking for a new (and I mean brand new!) Garmin Edge 520, I have one for sale in the classifieds at a discount on new from elsewhere.

https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/garmin-520-bike-computer-brand-new-unused.611547/

(Edit: mods if this post isn't acceptable/shouldn't link to the classifieds then please delete)

was this something to do with the "empty box" that you were shipped Adrian ?? - hope you get someone take you up on it, the 520's a great bit of kit - it's high time that Garmin did a 820 with all the 520's stuff and the mapping from the 800 series... hopefully my 800's battery will keep holding charge until that point, but if not I'll probably end up going for the 520, as the 1000 is just WAAAAAYY too big and bulky.

Hi Mark

Yes it was. Chain Reaction have been superb and despite a second issue, they came good and made sure my issue was sorted with compensation (which I didn't ask for) and without hassle (at the time I admit to being very worried about getting it sorted but this is where customer service shone through. I just hope they catch the person responsible)

The 520 is a fantastic bit of kit in such a small physical form and I've just installed Openstreet maps onto the 520 (using DC Rainmaker's guide) and the maps now are all that I will need and so easy to update etc.

I've also linked it to my Strava account for live segments etc. just need the weather to play ball so I can get out when I have some free time rather than being stuck on Zwift (which is enjoyable but doesn't use the Garmin :))

I wonder if Garmin are going to release an 820 they seem to be pushing the 1000 but who knows?

Garmin are usually pretty tight-lipped about their product releases (and keen on the NDA's that the pre-evaluators like DCR have to sign-up to in order to get the kit) - but even if they DO release a 820, I'll be trying to not buy it for a good 6 months until it gets out of the "needing firmware to be patched every couple of weeks" zone that pretty much all their cycling head-units seem to go through.

Has anyone here got any experience with the Suunto Ambit3 gps tracking watches? Not much difference between them and suing strava in in my opinion, but I do like the video they create at the end lol. My mate got one the other day and somehow the watch knew exactly where the snow was and showed it in the video, freaky.

That was me :). Feeling that ride today! Was already a hard group ride for me as it was, decided to try and follow the lead group when the group started racing for the end of the last lap.

Just about hung on until the leaders really picked the pace up before the finish, at which point they just vanished. Makes me wonder how accurate my power meter is on the turbo. I wouldn't describe myself as slow but I can't believe I'm that fast either.

Does your power meter compare to when you are out and about that you can tell?

There's a ride at 7pm tonight that says it is a Moderate pace (!) If I can I will try and start it but as they're going to be running at 2.0-2.5 I think that's a little above meat the moment!

Sorry I mean power meter as in the Turbo's calculation. Haven't really got much to compare to when on the road. Currently fighting the urge to buy some Garmin Vector pedals.

I really need to find a cheaper hobby or a better job, cycling and photography not the cheapest... not when you suffer from bad GAS anyway.

I did the FTP builder this PM then decided I'd dip into the BTW ride. Started off badly as I. Issued the first turn but rejoined them and then had a good ride with some of it in the group!!

I'm still plugging away on the 12week FTP Builder... sweet baby cheeses but its started ramping up the difficulty all of a sudden... first 5-6 weeks were pretty much "meh" but I'm currently on week 9 day 4, having done the first three days and the look of this one is pretty nasty... a good solid warmup, then 6x5 minute efforts at 100% FTP with 3 minute rest @ 50% (which is pretty near as hard as a straight 20 minutes worth out of a FTP test), 10 minutes of spinning and another 10 minutes @ 75%ftp just to get used to using residual lactic in the bloodstream as an additional energy source. All in all, it's 90 minutes of not particulary happy time on the trainer - probably followed by a good 10 minutes of mopping the floor afterwards...

Hardest thing to get used to for me, is that one (or more) of the prescription cocktail of med's i'm on causes - ahem - rather profuse sweating when exercising. I noticed the problem, and basically decided to try and ensure I didn't get too dehydrated, by attempting to measure how much fluid loss I was incurring. Measurment method being...

1. Have a pee, then climb onto the bathroom scales naked - measure how much you weigh.
2. Get dressed, get on the bike and ride for a hour, with a 750ml bottle of water / high5 electrolyte drink.
3. after 1 hour, get off the bike, finish bottle if you haven't already, get undressed, dry off with a towel, and climb back on the scales.
4. Subtract second weight from (first weight +0.75kg) - difference in kilo's = lost fluid in Litres...

I found that even with 2 large 16" pedestal fans blowing at me, in a unheated room (ambient around 15°C) I was losing around 1.5L of fluid per hour - so, I now "try" and go through a couple of bottles per hour. It does explain why, towards the end of a hours riding, that there is a steady stream of drips running off the handlebar ends, and my nose / chin - and why the trainer-mat needs to be hung outside to dry afterwards... I daren't attempt a metric or imperial century on the trainer, as I'm afraid I'd probably drown...

... first 5-6 weeks were pretty much "meh"...

That was my initial thoughts but wk2 (for me) is definitely building..I find the hardest thing is to keep your power output constant/within the zone but Zwift definitely helps with keeping the interest/preventing boredom. It's kind of addictive in a way - especially the FTP as you need to do the programme days...

I like the scientific approach :)
When I rode in the BTW on Zwift last night, I was a little damp around the edges and I'd drunk all of my water! My set up is in the garage which is probably 1oC above outside but sometimes I open the door to let some cool air in otherwise I would melt too!

The "scientific approach" was passed on to me by a mate who lives in California - there are times in summer that if they're going to do a Century Ride, they'll actually have to go out and create "Stashes" of water en-route (a cool-box full of bottled water, topped off with ice) in 2-3 places the night before - because there's pretty much nowhere to get a drink on the road, and with temperatures in the high 30's all day heatstroke is a constant worry. So, pretty much everyone does the "how much do I need to drink per hour" test like I outlined so they can keep track of how much to keep pouring down their neck...

it's really terrible though at the moment for me - when I asked the Quack about it, as to which of the meds it could be, he said "well, 3 from 5 of them have Hyperhidrosis as a potential side effect, so basically, you've got problems... I'd suggest just making sure the place you're exercising is well ventilated, get a fan running, and pour plenty of water and electrolytes down your neck. At which point I told him of my "test" above, and he just grinned and said "you've probably got a better handle on how to deal with it than I have Mark..."

I'm only worried that if it continues in a similar vein, if I get outside in any kind of half decent summer, and get a 5-6 hour ride in, I'm going to come back as dessicated as King Tut...

@tdodd

Tim, was that you on the SUB2 race in Zwift tonight? I couldn't get on so I watched a bit of it to see how they grouped etc. Shame I missed it as it looked better than the BTW one last night

Just back from my routine checkup at the GP's... Apparently, my "white coat syndrome"** is clearing up quite nicely....

Cyclists Numbers I guess... by The Big Yin, on Flickr

(excuse the crappy instagram picture quality - it was a quick grab with the iPad "just to remember the numbers, Doc" ;) )

Even the GP's coming around to the idea now that perhaps the meds are lowering my HR maybe just a little more than they intended... I must be honest, if my HR is 42 while sat in the doctors surgery, I dread to think how low it's getting when i'm relaxed and deep asleep...

** for those of you who don't know what I'm rabbiting on about - read this ;)

That's a good reading Mark - ideal but you wouldn't want it too much lower than that.

Was that your Zen heart rate @ 42 as well :) (y)

My bikes have sat in my shed for the past 12 months, thinking I might as well sell them!

Weathers going to be nice this summer ;). Start getting out on your bike now so you're fit enough to enjoy being out on them in summer!!

resting heart rate (as in, whilst still lying in bed on a morning, after waking "normally" (i.e. not with an alarm clock or similar "start") is usually between 34 and 37... anything over 40, and I take a day off riding as I'm not fully recovered from the last ride, or I'm coming down with some lurgy or other...
