Ugh, Mark, that sounds horrid. Is it diverticulosis? That is indeed debilitating from everything I've heard. I do hope you can do something to feel better. 22 loo visits is indeed a lot - when I have a bout I can get up to about 14 which is bad enough. Needless to say that does not do one's backside much good.

My problem has come back this week - triggered I think by a period of stress and tiredness. I'm struggling to travel and to stay on my feet for more than an hour or so - it also makes my back ache like hell. My stomach is churning, I feel sick, and I'm not sure whether to risk having any dinner or not. No fish and mash in the house at the moment but I might try half a bacon sandwich - they don't affect me too badly and are fairly comforting. Last three nights zero sleep so I am bad tempered as well. The whole thing almost kicked off a major road rage incident this morning when a guy started harassing me for not going fast enough and when his behaviour got too much I treated him to a stream of language I would never repeat here or anywhere else. Had he gone beyond that I'd have happily decked him. A decline in one's personality and communication skills is an unfortunate side-effect of these illnesses.
Hi Lindsay
Thanks for your comments
It's just awful how you feel isn't it?
I think this condition is so debilitating that unless you have suffered from something similar its hard to understand.

On a serious note, I think I may have sussed out what caused my last attack. I went through a phase of buying crumpets and lemon and raisin pancakes (mini ones). I suspect it was one of those 2 items, and my money is on the pancakes. Butt.....who knows for sure.

Nobody can understand unless they've had it.

I moan about it occasionally (but only to people who understand). Actually it's the least threatening of my health worries (but probably the most annoying).

The lemon flavouring/content probably. And if you also smother them with butter .....:LOL:

I use one of the cholesterol lowering spreads. I ate the pancakes straight from the toaster. I will have to check out the ingredients. I wondered about the raisins.

Ive been tried and tested for everything, nothing found, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, everything, trouble is its not all the time, maybe get an attack for a couple of days maybe twice a month and sometimes there's zero warning, a severe pain then im afraid if im not within 30 seconds of a toilet its whoooosh, been caught out several times in public, not nice.

That's how I used to be I found that Isbaghol husk in yogurt helps the panic attacks of this

I don't have ibs myself, but my wife does.

It seems to me that everyone has their own triggers, although stress seems universal.

She swears by mebeverine (colfac) and soluble fibre (physillum capsules). It's then a matter of avoiding the other triggers as much as possible, and stay well clear of junk and processed food.

If she forgets her pills before eating my svelte and demure wife turns into a sumo wrestler with the vocabulary of a docker!

Hmm, think I'll pass on the black teeth and the IBS!

I've given up on trying to figure what my triggers are. We kept a list of my triggers but over time its been whittled down. Common theme is veg, grains and fruit. Anything with fibre is very bad with me. So I've been carnivore for the last few months. Other than injection day I can forget I have Crohn's. I've had no more bouts of IBS like where's the loo right now episodes either.

Last week after a recommendation I gave Fennell Tea a try, not one for all the weird and wonderful remedies, but it has definitely cut down the belching and bloating.

Have you given rapberry leaf or green tea a try too? IMO they both taste a lot more pleasant than fennel and I find them both really soothing for intestinal problems.

I should say that I don't have IBS (or at least have never been diagnosed) but there are maybe a dozen different foods that give me IBS-like symptoms.
Not really an issue for me because I know what they are and can just avoid them, but I really sympathise for those of you who have to live with this day after day.
On the odd occasion when I've inadvertently eaten something disguised as an ingredient in something else, green tea or raspberry leaf tea are always the first things I head for (well the second thing after the initial stomach cramps and run for the loo anyway!)

I don't usually talk health on forums or personal stuff but...yeah...I get IBS. :( I hate it. For years my wife suffered and still does with it. I just don't understand how she lives with it so well. It cripples me and I don't think I get it as bad. Not to be too blunt but I don't get diarrhea with it hardly ever. Always constipation. I have not had tests. Every time I went to the doctor over the last 5 years or so, they have always brushed it off as "yeah you probably just have IBS" and then give me some mild laxative powder stuff". I'm not sure I even want to go through with the horrible kinds of tests I would need. I know I should but...I'm convinced there will be 99% chance of nothing good coming of it and only to be told that yes, I have IBS.

I tend to get it for sometimes a few days or sometimes 1-2 weeks, and then it tends to go away for a while. I have been for periods of months with nothing and then it will come and go for a few weeks, then again come back after a month or so. It's quite random. I eat anything and everything really and enjoy my food. I eat a relatively healthy diet but perhaps a little too much sugar. I have a fast metabolism and I'm lanky/skinny build. I've never attempted to try cutting foods out as it would be so difficult to do with my life style. I would not know where to start and just don't have the will power to attempt it.

In the worst times, I've been curled up in agony with it with stabbing pains. Then sometimes I get pain like this week where it feels more like back pain. It can vary from high up to very low down. Sometimes it feels like I just have a full bladder all the time due to I presume swelling and irritation. I try to eat stuff like like All Bran and drink prune juice etc, to try to get things moving. Sometimes after a day or two it clears. Sometimes not. I find it best to try to keep eating rather than stop, even during times where I feel sick and like eating is the last thing I should do.

It's very hard to explain to people how debilitating it is. I tend to try to hide it and not talk about it. I give my sympathy to those that also suffer. X

Did try green tea, no help and to be honest much prefer the Fennel tea tastewise too, but thanks for the suggestion Sarah

Actually, one of the things that I can't eat is coriander leaves (I seem to be OK with the seeds, or at least only have such a mild reaction that I don't notice) but I think fennel may be related to it.

I've never knowingly had a reaction to fennel - definitely not the rapid, very obvious reaction I get if I inadvertently eat coriander anyway - but perhaps an association with feeling mildly unwell after eating fennel is the reason that I don't like the flavour <shrug>

Glad that you've managed to find something that helps you a bit anyway.

There is no doubt about it that gastro intestinal issues some of the posters on here how they suffered.
I have had a real debilitating week at work so far yesterday was aloo visit record 22 visits each with some "production"
The gastro doctor said I have pockets in my bowel system that trap waste - boy does that hurt me.
Looking forward to five days fish and mash
Best wishes to all fellow sufferers

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with Diverticular disease and subsequently had 2 hospital admissions because of it, diverticulitis is no fun.

My bowel perforated just after elective surgery and I suffered faecal peritonitis and I am still living with the consequences 9 months later. Slowly on the mend but I would advise (due to my own experience) that if you ever need/decide to have a resection I WOULD opt for a defunctioning ileostomy to be on the safe side.

So sorry to hear that. I do hope my condition doesn't deteriorate

It sound a bit like me Gary, they thought I may have Crohnes (right side pain in ilieum) but only done a half colonoscopy and they put it down to IBS for me as it's common thing to go with the Fibromyalgia I have.

I have had very severe pains lasting for upto 2.5hrs before movement then a explosion. The pain is so severe that I feel like crying and I seem to have flushes, it's not nice, as we all understand in this thread. I mentioned Lepricol in one of my previous posts and this helps a lot of IBS suffers, although I found no benefit. Maybe worth a try. > http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...vptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_36ja1jqihe_b

Another thing which I forgot to mention earlier in thread is that my Dr also stated that prolonged use of lanzaporole can cause diarrhea, I changed to Omneprazole and I found some benefit. Regarding the Cramps I now take 80mgs of Buscopan dialy and this has helped with my cramps as I very rarely get the type I was experiencing before. I find this better now than the Meberverine I was taking previoulsy.

With constipation my last bout a few weeks ago when I went eight days without toilet and I find if I have a small but several doses over a few days of Lactulose it seems to help me to get back to normal (ish) within a few days.

Ive ordered some of the pysillium someone reccomended in this thread

Anyone here got LPR (silent reflux)?

Got diagnosed with this last Friday after visiting the ENT specialist, can't take Omepazole or any of the other similar PPI's so think its diet change for me

Bloody nuisance and constant throat clearing is annoying for everyone, be glad to get this year out of the way, sickly mob aren't we :)

Haven't felt right since I packed up smoking six months ago, thought it was supposed to work wonders

I quit 7 years ago, worst thing ive ever done in my life, been racked with all sorts of illness since, weight issues, blood pressure, extra strain on joints, colds at regular intervals summer ow winter, i have been told that when youre activley smoking your immune system is on full alert but when you stop it goes to sleep for a while and leaves you wide open

It's the opposite for me - I have an over-active immune system so am on immuno-suppressants. Means I end up catching everything that goes around as well.

There is also some evidence that suggests nicotine has some benefits for Crohn's/UC, though the disbenefits of smoking far outweigh what you would gain. Must admit that I have considered vaping to see if that helps...

Funny, my very first smoke on a morning used to send me scuttling to the bathroom, no sooner had i taken my first drag my guts started the pain and rumbles

Since I stoped its been one long run of problems, sinuses gone wild and digestion problems ten times worse that's apart from not sleeping properly and anxiety (never had that in all my fifty six years)

Still coughing up all the tarry crap which the reactivated cilla is clearing, less than pleasant

If I thought it would all improve I would be back on the smokes tomorrow, awful to say, but I often regret packing up.

My heartfelt commiserations to you all. My (ageing) mother has IBS (or something similar) and it rules her life. Doctors aren't that interested once it has been diagnosed.

I was once diagnosed with a debilitating condition but as it wasn't life-threatening I was left to my own devices. I was terrified! Luckily for me it's very much in the background nowadays.

Being not so young myself I can understand how your Mother must feel, mine is a mixture of IBS and intolerance to all milk products made with 'normal' a1 casein milk, so I now use a2 milk which is a2 casein and I can drink this one freely, I make a culture called Kefir with this milk, and a glass each morning helps to keep the good bacteria in my gut stable.

fortunately for me my IBS is not severe, I wish your Mother well Jerry.
