Photography Show 2022 17th-20th September at the NEC

I have to be honest, I did wonder why so many people had taken massive amounts of kit. I just assumed that it was a case of show and tell and a bit of bragging rights, you know, mines bigger and newer than yours lol.

Also so many people walking around glued to phones or vlogging...they will have missed most of it lol
I feel like it's just a case of taking their big expensive toys out for a spin in a safe environment that is directly related to their gear, albeit generally not the usual end purpose, maybe meet up with old mates and chat about their gear. Most of them don't look like they care what people think and that's sound.

That’s my favourite game to play there. There’s usually a few wandering around with a 100-400 around but my favourite spot one year was a guy with a 500mm f4!

That's one way of scouring the stands without moving around much :D Get a 500/600 and just sit in the corner or at the top of the Fujifilm tower :):D

In some cases I.e Olympus I know for certain there are check and clean facilities available . The others could just be part of the dirty mac brigade hoping for a window of opportunity with a model ..
Went with a friend ? A few years back whose sole intent was bird pics , not the feathered ones either .. rather embarrassing at the time

"dirty Mac brigade" ye there's always that element :(

I went to the show today, and I'm still not sure what to make of it. There were a lot of people that take modern photography very seriously. It was good to see photographers of all ethnicities and ages. But I suppose gear doesn't float my boat. I felt like an alien, to be honest. And yes, some photographers did go loaded for bear.

All of the above really. I guess some people might be looking to trade in gear, some wanting the right sized bag or a stable tripod, some were definitely there to shoot models although anything over 200mm would be pretty useless for that given the space I think.

Personally, the photo book stall is always worth a look and I usually get something from some of the talks. I thought the photos being exhibited were a bit run-of-the-mill which in itself was informative.

I thought that was good too and made me wonder about this forum and its demographics. There were a lot more women there than I remember from previous years and many with cameras and engaging with the stalls, not just keeping an eye on their partner's wallets.

It was quite noticeably more so than last year even. Mind you, I did chuckle to myself when I came across the Ilford stand and thought of their survey. :D

You could for example take it to test it on one of the new cameras... Just saying

I have only taken any kit once and that was to trade in for new kit which I did.

One reason for not getting younger photographers on the forum may be because their age group generally don’t do forums and are more in favour of social media apps. They’ve more likely to be involved in the likes of Facebook/Instagram/TikTok for sharing and discussing photos they take (generally with phones and not ‘proper’ cameras. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the latest app, Be Real, that’s going around the younger generations. It’s an interesting development to stop the ‘highlights reel’ produced by most social media sharing.

Think that applies even more so to photography clubs, they are seen as very old fashioned, quite often rightly so.
If its not online these days its invisible to many of the younger generation, adapt or die.

I agree about youth and I think TP might well be the sort of place that people come to later in life, like country pubs vs night clubs. However that doesn't explain the lack of women and ethnic minorities on here.

But how would you tell? Rob might be a Roberta, for all we know. :p I think we are beginning to see changes. But maybe they have to have time to filter through?

Yet again kicking Camera Clubs based on non-factual information. It is surprising that the 27% of TP members continue to take this.
My club runs a forum on its web site, has a Facebook and Twitter Account. We also have a few younger members and ethnic minorities. We have links with schools and the local University and international groups.

Yet again being the spokesperson for every club in the country.
How do you know its non factual information

How many clubs do you really think have lots of young members or an active online presence?
You seem to take any criticism personally, any particular reason you feel so persecuted?
I made a general comment in keeping with the conversation and up you pop all steamed up and on the defensive.

So where are you claiming these facts come from? You mentioned invisible and old-fashioned. I can see that all of the Photography Clubs in the Midland Federation have web sites and have done so as long as I can remember. In what way are they old fashioned? Surely that is just a personal opinion by you. I am not saying that clubs have lots of young members and many other clubs of various types are having difficulty in attracting younger people.

Dave

You are too liased and blinkered to have a rational discussion with
Have it your way, photography clubs are growing expodentially and overflowing with new young blood.
Enjoy your clubbing and may the competition judges smile upon your entries.

Calm down dear (both of you). You have differing views, accept it and move on.

There will be a variety of clubs all being run in different ways no doubt. In Wellingborough, we have/had a club that seemed to be focused on competition and exhibition, and although the website was rubbish pre-covid and appears to be non-existent now (404's for all except homepage), I do know that it had a small but very active young female membership and was pretty representative of the demographics of the area.

But only at weekends :naughty:

I think we have a fairly good handle on it and there is a lot of very "blokey" stuff posted on here which is what some people are here for and probably puts others off, we will never know.

I, perhaps being a member and not an owner, am not in the least bit bothered about the demographic make up of the forum.

More the content and quality of the conversation and images posted.

From what I've seen over the last few years, there's a lot more of this than there was and a lot less photography talk too. It most certainly puts me off and is a reason I'm spending less and less time on here. :headbang:

If I wanted to read about politics, football or religion or any other non-related crap I'd go to a forum that specialised in that. I wish those that do, would.

I'm all for disagreements and good debate - that's healthy, but this is supposed to be a PHOTOGRAPHY forum after all.

As for the rest . . . :mooning:

There's a non photography section for those topics, nobody is forced to read them though, TP is a community and having a separate section where off topic issues can be discussed can only be a good thing in my opinion as it means that the photography sections aren't overloaded with the subjects you're complaining about. Personally I avoid the political section as it seems like a left wing love in but it works for many members.

Following COVID many clubs are in financial difficulty so it is expected some will fold which is sad. One of the issues is that far from fearing to use the internet, many settled into using Zoom and now will not get out of their armchairs. While we are back meeting live, we will be offering some Zoom sessions particularly with international speakers. Most members have come back, and we seem to be attracting new members still.

Went yesterday, and the prices do appear to change for the 'pro' weekdays if the stickers are to be believed.

Didn't enjoy being ripped off on the compulsory parking charges of £17 (marston green car park full on weekdays) or the 'never mind' £8.05 cheese toastie.

It does appear to be overpopulated with late middle aged to elderly men carrying their retirement present around their necks. I once told a young girl who tried to make me buy a billingham bag on their stand that my willy waggling days are well behind me, which sent her into fits of laughter. Told her to imagine every old man that comes up to her showing off with their bilingham is really just waggling their willy at her. Caught her eye later in the day which again set her laughing.

Prices indeed got better for some items, and that was rather unfortunate for me. I got what I really should not get and I just hope the business case I had in mind works out for it somehow; R6 is really not an enjoyable piece of kit :(

Paid £0.00 for all three days. Shame diesel is so expensive

Went Tuesday ….defo better than last time but didn’t see SRS or Lee filters where I normally buy bits from……found a great Tenba Camo bag but no 20% off as it’s not released for a couple of weeks…..good discount on new DJI mini pro 3 and sorely tempted….free parking for the bike…. bought a bin end chroma key green background to fit my lastolite hilite but not sure what to do with it…

I saw that chroma lastolite bottle top, but it's for the 5x7 rather than the 6x7 standard. All my lasto 'parrot' green backgrounds give me an excellent key, much better than the more standard 'bottle' green.

Could it be they were dropping the price as it was last day and they were trying to get rid of old stock rather than ‘pro’ prices?

Wandered around this morning for a couple of hours as I’m local. Busy with too many old blokes dragging cameras around with bloody great lenses on them and huge back packs on. :ROFLMAO:

You do have to laugh. The number of people carrying a body with 70-200 or larger, some with a flash on top too made me laugh. I did take a body and a couple of lenses in a sling because I was going on a Nikon photo walk but that was the only time I got my camera out, just not really worth lugging loads of kit around just to show you like photography.

That's usually the case especially if they don't want to ship it all back to the warehouse

I've never been to these types of shows. Are they GAS-fests? or more than that? The website blurb for "be inspired" looked like it could be good.

By nature of the beast there will be a big focus on gear. If I was local, I might well have gone but Birmingham from the other side of Glasgow is a bit of a drive. Could have flown there and back I guess but airport parking at GLA is expensive.

Well, last time I looked the photography sections were full of photography threads.

They can generally be what you want them to be. If you want to look at stuff it’s all under one roof and you can spend hours walking around the different manufacturers looking and trying it. There are various talks going on too. I normally plan my day there around the different talks I want togo to and then look around the stands between the talks.

The last show I went to I was thinking for a travel tripod so it was great to be able to check out the different brands in one place.

The equipment is a large part of what's there, true. But there is also the opportunity to have discussions with people who know it inside out, and can offer advice.

For me, the big draws are:

the opportunity to examine different inkjet papers to assess suitability, and see if anything impresses me. This isn't something that can be done in a shop or online

the opportunity to discuss things with those of similar interests (I'm thinking analogue here!)

the Disabled Photographer's stand. Not only for equipment (I've got a few hard to find items there in the past) but also the out of print books

the booksellers (for want of a better term) to look at new books and check out later editions of ones I have

And, finally (because it seemed to die when Focus on Imaging did, and wasn't resurrected for The Photography Show) the exhibitions of students work from various colleges and universities. They were always worth studying. Alas, this seems to be no more

And, yes, I have bought several cameras and other items of equipment over the years.

I always enjoy going to the Societies of Photographers Trade Show in London
It's in a Hammersmith Hotel now, I preferred the previous Bayswater Road hotel venue.
A lot smaller than Birmingham obviously, but more than enough to spend a few hours looking round.
It used to be in January, but just seen its in March next year, I haven't been in the intervening Covid years
The main brands are there along with the usual big dealers and usually some excellent bargains to be had.
Plus you get to see all the Societies members photos that are entered in the various competitions.

Yes.....thought it was only still there because of the odd size which I happen to have....do you use yours much?

I run a school photography company and every school portrait taken since covid has been head and shoulders on a lastolite green background (either hi-lite bottletop or pop ups), giving parents choice of background for their child's pictures. Always shot secondary on lastolite green anyway, but covid stopped full body early years and primary hi-key white on a hi-lite in its tracks.

I get a perfect transparent key from the lastolite shade of 'parrot' green, even from frizzbomb little girls and through spectacles, which I never got from any other manufacturers shade of green background, inc all the Chinese made pop ups as they are too dark 'bottle' green to give a good key.

I know BBC studios paint their green screen sets with ICI parrot green paint.
