I'm not sure why you can't shoot RAW, as you're a Canon shooter you should use the Canon DPP software, it works great with your RAW or JPEG files.

You really need to be constantly monitoring your settings all the time, it's not a point and shoot opportunity, every frame should be deliberate.

I can shoot in RAW Phil, just can't view or process the files. This is because my notebook computer isn't beefy enough to accept the codec

[it won't install itself as the screen res is too low, I believe I have a thread about this problem somewhere]

Even if you can't process raw images at the moment, I'd still advise you to shoot raw so that you can get better edits in the future.

Well depending on how long your going to be away I would 100% be considering hiring this lens for the trip 24-70/2.8L it's such a stunning lens having used one on a couple of occasions
