I have been having an interesting "debate" with some others and wondered what the viewpoint was on here...!

Is Apple kit lets say the iMac 27" worth the money..!

I am not just talking about the hardware, think about the OS and everything else that comes with it.

I know you can get a similar spec'd PC for about the same money, but that is not running Mac OS and it does not look as good.

So open question.

Is the whole package worth the money........

And to all the people that think it is not, have you actually spent any time on a MAC to get your opinion....

YES
I work in IT administrating windows servers and desktops. I work on a 21" imac. At home i have a 24"imac.

For me not having to deal with the numerous windows updates, antivirus updates, internet security updates and programs like that, that slow windows machines down is a bonus.

My imac is on 24/7 and only restarted about every month, I cant leave Windows XP, Vista or W7 machines on for 10 days without them slowing to a crawl.

For me as an IT professional, I will always be administrating Windows networks as i believe for networking large numbers of computers, windows (microsoft) is better, but for home and personal use I will always be using OSX

okay sensible answer:

mac vs other pc - theyre both made up of intel based hardware, they can both be made to look nice (you dont have to have a beige plastic case anymore you know..) so the only difference is the OS which is personal preference.

what software are you running? avast uses about 3mb.

seriously, weve got some boxes that have uptime in the 100's of days.. :lol:

So why pay more for a MAC, the Windows OS can be changed or skinned to look like the Mac OS fairly easliy. I am more curious to find out if people that say it is not worth it have ever actually used a MAC properly, i best that most who have are the ones that will answer yes in this post..!:bonk:

And for the record Canon SUCKS as well... lol

for the record i support windows and osx boxes.

we get just as many support requests to our helpdesk from the apple users (1 of 3 floors) as the windows lot (mostly XP but rolling out 7).

why pay more? because apple can get away with it.

I've run them all.
it'll use 3mb whilst idle but when its involved in scanning documents or the system drive then its usage will shoot up.

I agree that AV like avast, AVG and Nod32 have come along way in terms of performance but then when pc's get bundled with Norton or Mcafe then its hard for the average home user to know any different.

yeh but do you use them heavily every day?
I have s2k3 & s2k8 boxes that stay up around 6 months at a time but I couldnt let my users use a client machine that has been on for over 10 days as they just wont perform as well as they can if they are freshly booted.

I am in a similar boat which is partly why i ask this question.

I use a 20 inch iMac to managed a windows network. I use Mac at home and we use windows servers.

I think that it is a lot to do with the old belief that Mac is for Photo and Video and creative stuff and Windows is for office stuff.

Like the adverts..!

yeah a couple run as scanner to email clients which get hammered, others monitor firewalls etc.

Exactly what I do then. I manage all my windows server remotly from my imac.
infact the only thing I use windows for now is some specific education software that only runs on windows.

In the same industry and agree with that

I always used Windows at work and home but then got myself a mac at home and never looked back, since convinced work to get me a MPB aswell which I use when at work and its far far easier to use than sometime windows based, should I need something windows based I have a virtual PC on here but its not used very often

and a lot of that old belief still exists in the design world.

you try and prise a mac away from a designer. yet they could do their job probably better in terms of £/performance when factoring the cost of a mac pro on a windows box. plus it'd integrate into the network better.

Yes but your not physically using those, they are set and left to perform tasks, scanning and monitoring etc.

I mean someone actually logging onto a machine, using the net using access, publisher & photoshop etc

theyre still doing their jobs with no peformance degridation..

seriously, if you need to reboot your windows box every 10 days youre not doing it right.

i reboot my laptop every 14 days when WSUS updates come down. no problems.

Yes your laptop, you who knows their way around a computer.
However, a user who just wants things done now and opens multiple instances of varoius big programs. Windows machines just dont release the memory as well.

Well, thats as far as im going in this debate as its all down to personal preferance. For me, Mac's and OSX server ME better than Windows PC's

aluminium? pah mines mag chassis..

personally i have nothing against macs, only their users who start spouting BS ;)
 
And that is why these threads always get closed. Sigh :(
