Ok I was over on another site *ahem* and a member over there was kind enough to visit over here and check us out.

This is what he had to say

"I really have nothing to offer to this site except idle chit chat, and that everyone here can see that. Their just being nice. Also there is more to life than flirting with people in a forum. Am I a flirt??? Continuing to tell me that his site was more "professional" and that kind of stuff doesn't carry on over there. So I should stay over here. Basically saying this site really doesn' t have much to offer anyone on a professional level. Anyway my question to all of you, IS THAT TRUE? Do all of you just see me here with nothing to offer but idle chit chat??? I know we chat alot here on the forums but I thought that's what made us a 'friendly' forum. I dunno. I'm in a tizzy now, lol.

Ok rant over,lol

Julie.

Sounds more like he fancies you .....you flirt you (only joking ). To be honest when I read the bit about flirting I thought he was referring to Arkady ;)

Some people take life too seriously...just ignore the prat ! You'll probably find he is also subscribed to Train Spotting & Model Railway forums.

He said that about you? Stuff 'em. I'm a member of another much larger UK-based photo forum. Getting constructive criticism over there is nigh on impossible. Just the usual 'Great shot, gets my vote' or 'Don't like it'.

If you enjoy the time you spend on here, what does it matter to anyone else? Stuff 'em. You have your own reasons for logging on here, as we all do. And nobody can criticise you for that beacuse they're YOUR reasons.

Chin up, and all that...

You stay here Jewel, if he doesn't realise there's more to a photography forum than photography he's got a problem longer term. If there's no community there's no forum.

How do I see you, through a very long telescope :p

i agree.....

you do contribute , one by just being here, and two , you post pics for all to see...

thats all any of us need do

and being chatty is the best way to comunicate,

MyPix aka ' Mr Cool ' lmao:thumb:

TBH Jewel your rant is not very clear ;) However people will always have their own opinions on things, you can please some of the people some of the time etc.

As a site we are very lucky to have what I believe is a good balance of members, they are all friendly and are willing to help, they welcome photographers of all standards and never talk down to anyone who is less skilled or knowledgeable than they, this builds the community spirit and encourages new members to become more involved and generally they learn a great deal while here. We are primarily a photography site but welcome idol chat, a general laugh and some ribbing of others as long as it is kept friendly. Everyone one of the members contribute to the site in many different ways, and I don’t believe anyone here (you included) is regarded as only contributing idol chit chat. Even if someone was, is that such a bad thing anyway? We are here for your enjoyment, if that to you means just chatting, what difference does that mean?

If your “acquaintance” can’t see that, then it is his problem, not yours and not ours. It’s a shame though as he doesn’t know what he is missing over here ;)

Doesnt say much for his site if hes actively telling people to leave, does it;)

One of the factors that I like about this place is that (and this is a good thing IMHO) it has people of all levels using all types of equipment, and more importantly I like the fact that if anymore has an opinion there is nothing stopping them from expressing .

I couldnt' agree more, but it's not "his" site persay. Not sure how the admin team would appreciate him telling people to take a flying leap though, lol.

You can flirt with me any time you like Jewel.;) The guy sounds like a dork! If you want to tell us which site it is I'll log on over there and tell him so. :whistling

Jewel, I really love your friendly banter and also the way you tell it to us straight!
This site is great, it really does discuss an image, something that is missing from other sites I frequent. I don't always agree with the stuff that is written but I feel that the members on this site can take a bit of critisism in good spirit. I do sometimes think that members think that images have been posted in the 'critique' section as oposed to the 'photo sharing' section though :ponders:

This is probably the only site I visit apart from one other specialised site that doesn't have regular rumpuses and fall outs with Mods deleting threads/posts left right and centre.

I like it here as it is a freindly bunch but I know when I really need help/advice or constructive criticism I'll get it right between the eyes.

There's nothing worse than a forum full of 'nice pic' posts or on the other hand 'looks like something my cat threw up...take your point n shoot piece of junk elsewhere' posts.

I feel like I can learn here and also contribute...I was chuffed to pieces when I got a couple of tutorials/reviews stuck on the front page.

Jewel...you have made a meaningful contribution here and I know you've asked lots of questions that have been satisfactorily answered.

What more can anyone ask from a forum?

Well we're a photographic site and unlike a lot of other sites out there we do actually try to help people and offer what advice we can. If you post a pic and people comment, it's because they're shutter heads and they're trying to help - it doesn't mean they're necessarily right, it's just their view. Nothing is more boring and fruitless than continous posts of Wow - great shot - superb etc etc.

I never mind my shots being criticized, but if it really troubles you, do what I tend to do - just read through the posts and at the end thank everyone nicely for their comments. :)

Julie.!!!

I know nothing about cameras or photography but stay here hoping to catch a bit of your Canadian wit..:)

In-fact if you leave I am gonna toss myself in the river and drown..:hissyfit:

Don't be so upset by some geek posting on an internet forum.

Its only the internet.. Its not real..

hey, I didn't mean that it bothered me, I quite like everything that goes on in this site, its refreshing, and fun...I just wondered if there was a difference between the two threads that's all, just an observation :getmecoat

there is a difference,

the critique thread means you are asking for it

the photo sharing thread means you get it whether you wanted it or no, lol

just joking.....

MyPix

thats probably me being picky on Sharing photos, sorry!

Jewel, pay no heed!

Lol at MyPix:laugh1:

:eek:fftopic: I have been waiting to use that for ages ;)

The critique forum was/is meant to allow for in depth critique as opposed to the general quick comments that the more experianced photographers notice almost straight away and usually reply with in the photo sharing section however as people expect more serious attention to detail and very critical (in a nice way) replies when they use the Photo Critique forum, many now only post stunning shots so it leaves us very little to get our teeth into ;)

got it thanks Steve :)

lol @ Mypix

Matty, say what you like, I can take it, well for most of the month anyway :embarasse

Seriously the best thing about this place is that we have such a varied mix of personalities and skill levels - from Pros to absolute beginners.

It's refreshing to see shots that people take just for themselves with no pretentions to being anything other than 'nice'.
It's also good that some people want to be as totally professional in thier image-making as time and money allow.

We cater for all tastes and levels - I think that's why we work so well together. Even when we're rowing with one another, it never gets personal.

And there is more to life than photography - it's the other stuff that makes life so interesting.

And so what if there's a bit of flirting - Steve's too cute not to  :D

Thought you were in the Army, Rob, not in the Navy...

hehehe

I've been hanging around with Matelots too long, obviously.

Nah - my heart and other organs belong to Jules and Minimeeze :thumb:

Couldnt agree more Rob ! :) except for the bit about Steve ! ;) LOL :getmecoat

This bit of the forum is all about idle chit chat isn't it?

yup

you never learn how to improve if no-one tells you where your going wrong. Perhaps the gent in question has missed the point of these forums?

So I should stay over here.

Yes, you should.

I'm never sure if you get us Brits, Lost in Translation applies to all English speakers I am sure, but I personally feel that having people from different parts of the world, whether that's you in Canada or ppuga in Mexico, is brilliant as we get to see images that otherwise we'd never see unless someone is on holiday there. And if we're honest, real life is not often seen when on holiday.

A case in point are the wonderful images shakari is showing us from Africa.

A bit of banter is good, it help people feel more comfortable and more likely to offer an image for the rest of us to see. Sometime they're brilliant and sometimes they're not, we can all put our hands up to that one, but the good thing is that people don't feel that they shouldn't post something because is not up to scratch. It may not be up to scratch for some members but we all have to start somewhere, that's how we learn.

So, this chap can keep his site, we'll keep our Jewel if he doesn't mind.

:)

Another vote for the "this guy is a total donkey" column from me.

I visit a few forums for a number of diferent things and this is probably the most open and friendly place I know on the internet...... and that includes the one I mod on.

The balance and mix of folks here is just brilliant and while I can see how it's not as concentrated on imagry and technobable as some people like, I hope it never changes. The fact that people come here just to be with the like minded sometimes lifts it miles above places that just aspire to be professional.

D :)

I've only had the time to subscribe to three forums. One is the inevitable "great shot" type forum and the other consists mostly of "which camera?" posts. This is the most friendly, helpful and knowledgeable of the three and the one I like to browse the most.

Once I'm moved, settled and married I'm sure I'll have far more time to contribute :woot:

Lady - you post pictures, you criticise, you take part in general chit chat, in short you participate ... we all do and that is why we have a growing and improving community and not a spiteful better than thou excuse for a forum ! :innocent:

Stay here, have fun, keep posting and above all ... keep participating ? :thumb:

Oh ... and forget the moron he just ain't worth it ! :smilenod:

send over the forum link, we can all sign up and flirt with each other and really cheese them off. :D One thing i do like about this forum is the detailed constructive cristiscm, the re edits by other members with detailed explanations on what was done so we all learn, and half the population of Scotland is here lol.

Not to mention a fair proportion of us driving Fraud Mundanos... (or the Contour in US & Canada!)

:nono: lol

I know you're only joking, but just incase anyone was thinking of doing that, can I please ask you not to ;)
The last thing we need is a forum war. I've just got out of the bath, and my uniform is in the wash. And I don't want to miss Coronation Street tonight.

Besides, we only have one gun and Arkady spilt his hot chocolate all over it this morning.

Thanks for all the kind words though about the forum here by the way. It really is appreciated. To see that we've grown into a respected community where people actually WANT to be here (instead of us having to force them to come and post), is lovely to hear :)

Stop it I'm gerrin all sentimental now...

:D
