Yes
I'm confused. I've had an email from what appears to be the Royal Mail informing me that I have an unpaid shipping fee of £1.45. I haven't taken any action, for the simple reason that I have only sent one parcel which was weighed and paid for at the Post Office, and that's been received. The only other thing I've despatched is an A5 jiffy bag with a pre-paid label, and that was received as well. Also any orders I might have placed I've received. So I'm suspecting a possible scam. Does anyone know if this is a thing, or not?

Yes it's a scam, I've had texts and emails
supposedly from Royal Mail but the link and sender details aren't RM addresses

"postage" scams - a daily occurrence particularly to your mobile phone

I've also started to get crypto payment demands for "visiting" porno sites - demanding crypto payments to stop them sending emails to all my address book - I wish they'd give me links to the porno sites so that I could "have a look" - they seem to have "hacked" into a car Forum that I have been a member of as they address me by my forum login name.

Royal Mail will never email you. Have you ever given Royal Mail your email address when buying postage?

Massive thing yes! Vendor or company name can be anything and at some point you will think hmmm it might be...but no.

I don't think I've ever been asked.

It all looked very convincing. And you're right, I did begin to doubt myself. We're probably all sending, or expecting something. So you never know.

always "click on" the senders address and you will see that it is false

We have recently received a couple of parcels via Evri. On both occasions we got a scam text, so I'm pretty sure that either they have an insider, or they've broken into Evri's IT system....

I think most couriers these days contract out their deliveries, so who can tell.

Unfortunately your wrong here , some of the new services do update you re.delivery with your e.mail addy supplied by sender . Think it’s the tracked 24 / 48 or might be parcelforce ones

Did the e-mail contain your name and details of the delivery?

I can't actually remember now. I have deleted it in any case. No details though. Just a number that seemed to be completely spurious and the amount allegedly owed. No indication as to what it might have been and when it was supposedly sent.

Get so many of these, and similar since a data breach at my pension admins last year, they all go straight to junk anyway, I don’t buy much mail order anyway so I know if a parcel is due, besides, it’s the senders function to ensure postage is correct when they send it?

I got a new one today, a phone call with a pre-recorded message saying their was a problem with my immigration status and to press one to be put through.
Now while I'm a British citizen and have been since birth, I can see this getting a few.

My wife got a message yesterday on her mobile saying that our land line was to be cut off - "please phone this number to prevent this" or something like that - again a pre-recorded message

I had a reasonably convincing call yesterday from my bank’s “security department ” telling me there had been a couple of suspicious attempts at using my card in Scotland and how my card would be blocked and a new one issued. There was then a lot of advice about being careful online and not using public wifi connections. It was only when the guy started asking about a rough idea of my account balance that alarm bells started ringing… if it had been a genuine call surely they should known this? “Oh I can’t see all the details, that has to be someone of a higher clearance”. He then got even more twitchy when I said I’d call the fraud department back to verify things, so I hung up. Luckily I’m normally very cautious and hadn’t given him any information.

My mum (R.I.P) fell for the charm of an Indian con-man over the 'phone . . . she said he was lovely - Yeah, and so she purchased transferrable gift cards worth thousands over time which she transferred of course. Luckily one time when she had carers visiting her one such phone call occurred and subsequently everyone was alerted and her affairs were then looked after by the family. Fortunately the money lost was not missed, to others though it might have been devastating. If you don't have an LPA (Legal Power of Attorney) for you for the future, think about it while you still can think about it !

Your internet connection being cut off is also a good one.

My idiot partner managed to compromise not just his credit card but also his debit card by clicking on a link in a text to evriii ...

Despite actually being trained in this stuff through work, not only did he click the link, but he then input his credit card details and when that didn't work he also gave them his debit card details. :$

I had to force him to contact his bank when he got here for dinner, having done this in the afternoon!!!!

Good job his credit card provider are on the ball and blocked his card when someone tried to link it to ApplePay.

Both cards now blocked and new ones ordered, but I have had to book my own Birthday meal out and may have to pay for it if his cards don't arrive by Saturday.

Funnily enough I've just been informed my internet connection is being used for criminal purposes. Again! :D

I have a lot of parcels from UPS and Fedex that I've paid my fees for. Can't wait to see what they are!

A few years ago I had a similar one - an email telling me the Metropolitan police and the UK security services had detected information related to child pornography and terrorism on my computer, but if I clicked in a link I could transfer £1,000 and the information would be remotely deleted!

That's horrible! Never mind scam, that's blackmail.

I wasn't bothered by it as it was so obviously a scam. What amused me was that someone thought what they had written would was believable, as if that would be the response of the Met and the security services if they found such information on a person's computer.

Those Royal Mail postal charges things... I've lost count of how many of those and ones from other couriers I've had. I don't get them every day but it seems like it as they're certainly a regular thing.

On Nigeria and crime... We've recently become friends with a Nigerian family and they're shocked at the level of crime here in the UK. I think partly because Nigeria seems to have a police force which does more than supply crime numbers and get victim support to send you a nice letter.

I havent had any of these thing for many years. The last one must be over 10 years ago was some poor chap dying of cancer with 100 million us dollars left in his bank account by some oil company. He'd been told I was an honest person who could help get the money out of whatever country he claimed to be.
We messaged back and from for a bit, then I got bored and asked his doctors name and said I'd get a doctor friend to call his doctor and see if he could help... in case his doctor was scamming him... Oddly I never heard back. ;)

I have not had any scam e-mails, or text massages for several years, and even the scam phone calls are few and far between.

I've had one where the scammer said I was 'watched' enjoying 'adult' sites.... except when I am not in video calls the flap on my logi webcam covers the camera....(and I don't visit the sites... ;) )

I've received this scam email too, multiple times....Would love to know how they got the webcam footage since I've never had or used a webcam!!!

Ah, you never know who is watching, or even listening to every word you say. So called smart TV's and speakers are harvesting data 24/7. Because that's what they do, they listen and watch.

I recall hearing about a 15 year old lad who had a similar message and they demanded money not to show the video of him . A scam of course but the lad believed it and committed suicide. I'm sure he had some kind of learning difficulties...Whatever, he was, in some way, vulnerable. I heard his father talking about it on Radio4 on a piece about such scams in relation to porn.

Just last week a tech 'expert' was on the radio talking about this sort of thing and he said what you've described is a myth re the TV.. A couple of years ago I recall a thread on it... on here. You discuss something at home ..eg a holiday in Norway and next thing is your inbox has ads for...er..hoilidays in Norway and other destinations. It's happened to new parents talking about buying a buggy and whatever else for the baby. This expert said no, it wasn't your smart TV listening to you but it can happen with Alexa or similar units. It's some kind of algorithm at work. It was so technical I can't recall what he said.

This is dated April 2022 and concerns Alexa. https://www.theverge.com/2022/4/28/23047026/amazon-alexa-voice-data-targeted-ads-research-report

Also,this one https://www.komando.com/security/alexa-targeted-ads/836536/

And this one explains how to turn off Alexa's listening device but you will lose other aspects of it . https://eu.usatoday.com/story/tech/...n-ads-and-alexa-from-tracking-you/1488245001/

It could be the TV. One of ours apparently has Alexa built into it.
