Should I be suspicious?

Andy, have you tried a 1050x1060 crop yet?

......right done it and I see what you are getting at. It don't really fit. ;) This is the best I can get with a 1050x1060 crop.

The devil is in the detail, and it's the mismatch in the details that makes it all seem rather odd to me. Might also be worth confirming the image size and sending a low res version of the file (320px would be enough) to show how awkward the image would look at the print size she's requesting.

Well todays message from here is,

OK, just send me the original size so that I'll be able to print an artwork in a big format.
OK?

Um I don't think so lady. I might send here a quote for the original image just for a laugh. Alamy seems to quote around about £1500 for a high res image. :naughty:

Seriously.. your not going to send her the original for 80 quid?

what are you going to do with it?

Sorry I just seriosuly dont understand why you wouldnt sell her the original for personal use for 80 quid... Personally I would jump at it..

is it an important unique picture?

Do you believe that in this instance the image is really for purely personal use?

There are far too many inconsistencies for me. The final image size is very specific, and very specifically bears no relationship to the aspect ratio of the original.

By the way, I have these magic beans.. ..

I might send it her yes. I am still a little suspicious that she intends to do other things with it though.

It's two files she wants which I quoted £80 for. Alamy quotes about £40-50 each so I thought it was about right.

Should I be charging more if I think she might not be intending to do with it what she says or just I not be bothered anyway as it's £80 I wouldn't be getting otherwise? It could pay for getting myself a website set up something.

My personal thought on this and i am purley an amature is let it go, do not send anything.

It seems to me you cannot win on this site, (no digs at anyone here) that the devil you do the devil you dont, one person says yes sell it you should always charge blah blah blah, others say give it away knowing they will be using it and could in a sence make alot of money from it.

I do not sell images (ok only been asked once) for this reason, I do not trust anyone and this story just seems so odd, there are soooo many inconsistancies in it.
If you donot need the £80 then do nothing more. take the images down for now so she cannot steal them either, or move your watermark to a more prominent place.

Do you believe that in this instance the image is really for purely personal use?..

what does it matter.. whats everyone scared of? if they wanted to do anything dodgy they could ahve just lifted it by now.... we already covered the exif and email stating personal use only so no comeback if they use otherwise...

seriosuly how paranoid can people get over a picture..

the aternative.. leave it there within millions of other flickr files... or make 80 quid.. :)

You could always ask for a name and address to put on the invoice.. if it's a UK or EU address all well and good, but if it's somewhere in Kiev..

your picture.. your choice.. personally i cant understand why your faffing about.. others say dont sell it dont send it which amazes me...

if i offered you 80 quid to go out and take 2 pics of a plane and give me the files.. would you do it? if i offered it you every day would you?

thats me done on the subject.. people are starting to bicker about each others comments so... read the thread.. decide what makes YOU happy not everyone else and good luck :)

Times are hard so I think I will take the cash. I have said that if she wants the full originals I will do it for £100 though I will probably still take £80 if she says no.

If she does use the image for other things I'm pretty unlikely to ever know or find out anyway. If I do then I will ask for more cash, a lot more.

I totally agree. If they were taken for nothing more than pleasure, you arent missing out and are making money from images that might have just sat on your hard drive.

Just add a side note that its for personal use only and any other use is against the terms of the sale and will be chargeable

my question is - will you send the images first then await payment, or will you wait until payment has been received before sending?

or will you 'synchronise'? lol

sorry, I jest.

However, if she sends you any more than £80 keep your guard up :D

and I would also make the pics private so no-one can snitch them while the transaction is underway

hope it's genuine and you get more interest from it :)

If she does what do I do then? I have hear of such scams but not about what to do about it.

It's a classic scam, been doing the rounds for years. It keeps going because new people who haven't yet come across it can still get caught - it's a bit more subtle than some.

Basically, you get paid for some service, but the cheque is in error in your favour. You are then asked to refund the difference, or pass it on to `the framer` perhaps. (This is often aimed at wedding photographers, who are asked to pass on the difference to `the wedding planner` or similar). Some time down the line, the original cheque bounces, the bank take it back from your account, and you are left cursing.

I have already told her I won't accept anything other than bank transfer or paypal. Can a similar thing be done with bt?

Dunno. Expert advice needed, I guess. I'm sure there will be some here somewhere, but I'd start by seeing if your bank can offer any advice. Didn't someone up-thread suggest asking for an fairly outrageous sum? You could try that. If she agrees to pay, it's probably time to step away.

Well I quoted £80 to start off which she didn't question. Now I have asked for £100 for the original files she came straight back and said send me your bank details. Seems king of a lot to pay for two images to then print for a husbands Christmas present. :suspect:

She just send me this message in reply to me asking what type of payment she would use. This is the message in it's entirety.
from bank to credit card

I have decided that I am happy with selling the images for £100. What I don't want to get in to is some scam that either loses me money or means I have lengthy dealings with the banks when/if something goes wrong. :(

I'm soooooo unsure what to do.

if she is sending it from her credit card maybe she can do a charge back?

so she could pay you like £500 and then do a chargeback or something? is there anything dodgy with that?

Go on paypal, click on send an invoice, invoice the lady for £100, she pays £100, no more no less.

She doesnt even need paypal to pay it, she just clicks on the link from the email it send her and takes her to a payment screen.

Bosh.

Can provide more details if you need them, that's how I used to invoice people. Easy as you like

That sounds good. Do you go to Request money, then Create and Invoice?

This getting into a long process! Anyway I have said to her I will require payment via paypal invoice as stated above by Danny. I also said I will send them only once the payment has cleared into my actual banks account. If she says no then I think I will leave the whole thing.

Well it's all a learning process mate :)

Next time just bang an invoice over, if they accept it, sorted. If not, no worries. No stress....

You'll be doing alot of this if you go into paid photographic work. Here's hoping anyways!

If she doesnt have Paypal, she cant reclaim the money, unlike others who can request a refund.

Just an update on this. Needless to say after I said I would invoice her I haven't heard anything from her.

Looks like someone has had a similar request. See thread in Business forum.

She send me a message today saying invoice is ok. Hmm. Maybe I should just go ahead and do it?

cant believe this is still going on, just do it.

You prob wont ever sell those images again anyway, no offence take the money!
I`ve let an agency use one of my images for free once for their advertisement, a mate said i was a fool, but my name is out there generating visits to my sites which i n turn MAY make more sales?

Right I have sent the invoice. I can't see her being able to get at my money doing it that way if she really is up to no good.

I could really use the £100 coming up to Christmas!

Good luck Andy.. if she's accepting a Paypal invoice and paying that way then maybe she is genuine, but this has sounded like a hooky enquiry from the start.

I'm surprised she's still interested
