Following on from this thread, I thought I'd revive the idea and start a new thread since the original seems to have disappeared.

Most of us have / had a kit lens with our camera and they're generally much maligned.
Are they really that bad?
Clearly there are far better lenses out there, but can you still get a decent photo out of them?

Show us what you can do.
Post your best / favourite kit lens shots here and tell us which kit lens you used.

Great idea to resurect this thread!

Awesome photo's Sarah. I really like all of them.

Cracking pictures and it proves the point that it's the photographer behind the camera that counts :)
It's not the gear!
Alas I no longer own a kit lens mine was smashed in a RTA but the 18-55mm kit lens I had on my D50 was a corker :)
Small lightweight and optically pin sharp. :)

Post them up... its not a competition, everyone is welcome! (y)
In that case here goes.....be gentle! Ive only had my camera for a few months and am new to photography.:)

Firstly I have to say what a bunch of fantastic photo's! I'm on my third week with my first DSLR so here goes with my selection.

All were taken with the Nikkor 18-200mm AF-S VR lens, and no pp has been done on the images. I'm thinking of buying lightroom 3, to help with this.

Macro attempt on a flower with a small insect.

Next one was a pigeon sunning himself. He didn't move a muscle, just eyeballed me while I snapped away!

Lastly, my first attempt at a street shot. I was actually having a drink sat on a wall with a mate (you can see the shadow of his arm) and took the picture from the hip. I'm no expert on composition or anything but thought it came out okay.

No recent ones but here's a few from a while back - EOS 400D with 18-55 non-IS Kit lens

Some cracking stuff so far! Here's one of mine with the 50D + 17-85mm:

Wow !!!

Been working away for a few days and haven't been on here, but I'm surprised at how well this thread has taken off.

Philip, I'm glad that you shared yours in the end. Nothing at all to be shy about with those (y)

Well done everyone and keep them coming.
I'm not going to pick favourites, but there are some lovely shots there.

All my flickr atm, still waiting to get a new lens. Hope fully a Canon 50mm 1.8

Some recent ones that i like are these -

Add me of flickr aswell, can never have enough contacts. ;)

My relationship with the 18-55mm kit lens has been a bit up and down! At first I loved it, then I got a 50mm f1.8, which took priority. Now, I'm appreciating the width of the 18-55mm again! However, having just got a 70-200mm F4L, I'm all about the zoooom :D

Anyway, I'll throw some more sports ones into the mix, it appears to be lacking in here a bit :p

If you meant me there Sarah thanks very much. All i can say is i'm learning fast and take great inspiration from these images. That set of photos was the 1st time ive used my camera in Manual mode as its all just clicked with the settings and my understanding of the exposure bar on my D5000. As said it goes to show that its possible to take stunning photos with affordable equipment. Im buzzing at the minute as my Angel of the North photo is currently in the lead of a competition on Detailing World where the theme was 'Metal'. I stand to win about £80 worth of Espuma detailing gear. (polish, shampoo etc) Onwards n Upwards!;)

Blinding idea, and examples of why gear isn't always important. Having said that, I feel much more confident with my current setup than the old 18-70 Sony kit lens. Loved it at first, but as someone above mentioned, getting a 50mm 1.8 changes that quickly. Getting extra wide end, faster AF, longer short end etc. etc. is nice.

anyways, dug out a few shots taken on the way to work one morning (had cam in the boot from the weekend). These are evidence if it were needed that:
- it's not the gear
- it's not the user
- it's the scene!
