Sigma 24-70 f2.8

Hey guys, I've decided to upgraded my kit lens on my nikon d3100. Want something that can handle low light and has more reach so came up with the sigma 24-70 2.8, I no a lot of people say the tamron 17-50 is a good upgrade but dosnt have the reach. So who has or has used the sigma? Cheers dave

not what your after but i had the sigma 17-50 2.8 and it was stunning.

Yea the sigma and the tamron are the same but the tamron seem to have the backing of most people.

You would be better off with the sigma 17-50mm 2.8 with your d3100 as its a crop sensor I had one before going full frame.

I've heard that, but what I'm after is more reach on my walk around lens that can handle the low light.

Has anyone used the sigma 24-70 on a crop and what was it like?

I strongly suggest you cough up for Nikon or go with one of 17-50 f/2.8 lenses.

I tried both sigma and Nikon versions on my d7000 before I purchased and I opted for the Nikon. Sure it costs a lot more, but it's also much better. Faster af and sharper and built to last.

However, if I wasn't planning to move to ff (which I now have) I would of gone for a 17-50 as on a crop the 24-70 isn't a great range

I have the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 IF EX HSM on a Canon mount. I wanted a Canon L MkI but couldn't afford it so went for the Sigma after borrowing a mates lens for about half an hour. I got it to compliment my Canon 70-200 f2.8L MkII and TBH after looking at some of the shots I've done with it I wont need to go for the Canon MkI. It's very well built, feels nice in the hand and produces some great IQ shots.

I've used it mostly on my 5D3 but it did get a few goes on my 7D and will get some time on my new 70D. I find it a very good length on a crop, but most of my shots are on the longer end rather than the short end.

The new Tamron is now getting some very good reviews but I've not had chance to try one yet. The VC on the Tamron could be a benefit to some people but I don't find it a great problem not having it on the Sigma.
