I have a shot I like to do at weddings where I back light the couple with flash and have them totally dark. My problem is that I can't get the camera to auto focus. I could manually focus I guess but if the move too much, I am stuffed.

It does a pretty good job and I normally get one or two but I would like to nail it every time.

Any ideas?

A torch whilst the camera autofocuses and switch to manual to lock it in place whilst you take the shot...

Surprised it doesn't AF properly. What AF point selector setting, camera body and lens setup do you use.

Torch sounds like a good idea but it would reduce contrast and make AF more difficult...

Manual focus is your only way to guarantee it.

5DMKII, 24-105 spot metering centre focus point selected. I do get some to focus but not every time.

This is what I want to achieve, but I have to capture it quickly to get them at the right spot. It if won't lock focus I miss the image.

See what you mean, no solution other than MF I afraid. But not a people person so that's just me!

Put a speedlight on the camera and disable the flash output. You still get the focus assit light from the flash, useful for all low light situations when you don't want flash. In fact I just have a button assigned on the camera to disable flash when I don't want it to fire. Works well for the backlit shots you are talking about.

Thanks for that Lensflair I can see that would work but I have my wireless trigger on my hotshoe for the flash opposite me. Tricky no? :)

I have my wireless trigger plugged into camera body or PC port on the flash in the hot shoe, can you plug your trigger into on camera flash or straight into camera body like that?

This way you have an on camera flash if you need a bit of fill when using off camera flash too. I just put hot shoe flash into TL mode with a heap of flash exposure compensation dialed in and use it when I want to lift shadows a little.
