i took mine to benidorm, so no problems with the airport in your hand luggage, IIRC you can have a seperate camera bag aswell as your hand luggage bag allowance.
I always take mine in my hand luggage then I can take images out of the window if you have a window seat, and I always take Monkehs Arthur and Martha, to have a bit of fun as well, passes the time
I seem to be the only one who thinks that the idea of being "safe" is rather to do with it being nicked, as opposed to having issues at customs!
Just Dave, love the monkeh shots. I keep meaning to take some kind of figure away with me. I was thinking about the Easyjet teddy bear, to try and win free flights!!
At least with ryanair, they are very strict about that. I remember a couple of cases just with women. They say for security reason, but it could be different for other companies and intercontinental flights
I managed to get a Lowepro on board with 12kg of gear on my last trip to the Canaries, no problem at check in (it was hand luggage) and kept it under my seat on the plane.
It did take a little longer to pass through the X-Ray machine though, the guy had a damn good look in there

I wish I'd had my SLR on honeymoon in Malta and at Mount Etna. If you don't take it, you'll probably regret it. Just make sure your kit is fully insured and don't forget to shwo us your best shots.
I have flown with 2 pieces of hand luggage a number of times(mostly sleezy jet), even my very large backpack. The airlines dont want to take responsibility for such high value kit in the hold. I would walk away from a flight rather than let them take my camera gear off me and put it in the hold.
All in all it is worth calling the airline before you book, get the name of the person you talk to and ask for a confirmation email.
I've never had a problem with a back pack full of equipment!
always put by my feet (never get it under the seat so big) but do get the camera out on the plan and take pictures by the window!
mind you... never take a tripod through the scanners in a Italian airport!
though it was quite nice getting padded down by a nice Italian women
I've got to take two laptops with me Wednesday Verona & not sure if allowed Backpack & laptop case? - do you think they would get funny?
You're right...but do you insert the camera bag in there?
actually I myself use a pretty large plastic bag, quite full, with food - If they create problems, I would say it is only food and at the last I can leave it.
That kind of bag is even better to carry, probably Iwill try it next time. The fact is, what would happen if they make problem?where do we put our equipment?
I think it is also related to the airport dimensions in some way. Leaving from Liverpool (is that big?), I saw them really strict. Usually I fly from Bristol or Birmingham, they actually look all right.
Any experience from Heathrow o Gatwick? I will leave from there to Australia - I wouldn't like to have that kind of surprise!
We are going to Italy in July (Flying into Ciampino) for a wedding and I really want to take my SLR with me to try and get some nice pictures. I was wondering how I'd transport it and after asking a few people they said the best way would be to put my camera bag inside my hand luggage. Now I just need to find a bag for my hand luggage that is big enough to put my camera bag in to.
Having done a few online quotes for insurance it seems that you have to check the small print very carefully. A couple of quotes I did say the maximum amount claimable for a personal item is £250 and that if taking photographic or video equipment a higher level of insurance will be required. Luckily we pay extra for items away from the home on overseas travel up to a maximum of £2500 so that will cover my camera on our home insurance.
It is definitely doing research and if you have home insurance giving them a call and seeing if they can offer anything that will cover your camera outside of the home for an additional premium.
