sold the kit lens ;-(
but i will want to replace that with the tamron 28-75 f2.8 as enjoyed it with the sony
but still wanted a very all in one lens when limited to carrying just the one lens
If you want a all in one lens get a P&S with a 10x zoom. These hyperzooms as they are called 18-200mm, 18-275mm are a waste of money in my opinion, they promise lots and deliver very little. You are better off buy 2 lenses, better image quality and performance all round. That's why there are lots of lenses to choose from, each has a specific job, range to work in.
Normally I would agree with you but the IQ with Tamron 18-270mm VR is equal to (if not slightly better) than combination of a Canon 17-85 IS and a 55-250mm IS.
For the price and the fact that it's a consumer lens, it's very good value for money.
As a walkabout lens it's ideal for anyone on a tight budget.
But these aren't great lenses either. Budget lenses yes, but require good light to perform well. There are better alternatives that won't break the bank, have a look on the 2nd hand market when budgets are tight, get more for your $$$
