No
thoughts?

how does it compare to the 18-270 tamron version or nikon 18-200vr?

no thoughts?

i guess not a popular choice then

VC on it is amazing... best implementation of VR / IS yet.

Decent lens. Probably better than the 18-200 VR, but IMHO this is a lens for full frame owners really due to 28mm.

Personally my advice is to stick with your 18-105 VR and get a 55-200 VR to get a bit more reach. Or a 70-300 VR lens.

Forget all in one super zooms really. You can do a lot better for less money.

sold the kit lens ;-(

but i will want to replace that with the tamron 28-75 f2.8 as enjoyed it with the sony

but still wanted a very all in one lens when limited to carrying just the one lens

I've got the non-VC Canon fit version, a nice all-in-one carry anywhere lens

I've never used the 28-300mm but the 18-270mm VR is a cracking lens for the money.

If you want a all in one lens get a P&S with a 10x zoom. These hyperzooms as they are called 18-200mm, 18-275mm are a waste of money in my opinion, they promise lots and deliver very little. You are better off buy 2 lenses, better image quality and performance all round. That's why there are lots of lenses to choose from, each has a specific job, range to work in.

Normally I would agree with you but the IQ with Tamron 18-270mm VR is equal to (if not slightly better) than combination of a Canon 17-85 IS and a 55-250mm IS.
For the price and the fact that it's a consumer lens, it's very good value for money.
As a walkabout lens it's ideal for anyone on a tight budget.

But these aren't great lenses either. Budget lenses yes, but require good light to perform well. There are better alternatives that won't break the bank, have a look on the 2nd hand market when budgets are tight, get more for your $$$

It's not meant to be a great lens, it's meant to be a good easy to carry lens

In the days when I don't want to go out with my 50D + 24-70 + 70-200 + bag to lug it all in I can just pop on my 28-300 & carry it round my neck.

Horses for courses as they say :)

I used to have a Tamron 28-300. I bought it for the same reason that mrgubby wants it - the convenience of a single lens for all day. Personally, I would much rather have the quality of more lenses, although the 28-300 is OK for 6x4s. For little prints and web use it'll be OK - not great but it'll do the job. The chap I sold mine to loved it last time we spoke.

I should point out that mine was NOT the VC version and I'm not sure if they improved the optics when the added the VC to it.
