The 2014 Season F1 Thread

Caterham not in usa Marussa not in usa
Bernie has said he dosnt care if the lower teams fold and he isnt going round with a begging bowl
The lower teams are now sauber and Lotus
I wonder at which point he decides to retire and leave the mess behind him

Perhaps that decision to bring in the new (and very expensive) engine regs is having a somewhat predictable outcome. More efficient technology was needed to keep the manufacturers interested but did so much need to be changed? Or should FOM have absorbed more of the costs.

Very sad, but not surprising its been on the cards for a while. Bernie and his cronies bleeding the sport dry to keep there lifestyle. While not cracking down and making the engine manufactures subsidise the extra cost for the small teams.

Or as Max says
Let them spend what they want on developing green motors but only let them sell them at 4 million instead of the reputed 15 million plus
Or Maybe share the uneven split of money a little bit fairer
Or Maybe put some money back into the sport / show whatever
But the racing will be brilliant in the future with four teams wont it

Yeh, with only 4 teams of 3 or 4 cars we could have 4 mini races within 1 grand prix......isn't that like gt racing with separate classes on track at the same time....maybe have F1 and GP2 race at the same time, that would boost the field :)

With Bernie keep harping on about 3 car teams, image the pit stops with one team servicing 3 cars, especially in a safety car scenario.
Suppose they'd have extra garage space so maybe be able to have 2 pit crews per team.

Facts from the last race
Lewis Hamilton joined Nigel Mansell as the sixth most successful Formula One driver in terms of race wins by taking the 31st victory of his career at Sochi. One more victory will make Hamilton the most successful British driver of all time in terms of race victories.

Hamilton led every lap of the race – for the fifth time in his career – and set pole position, but was beaten to fastest lap.

That went to Valtteri Bottas, for the first time in his F1 career. That means two-thirds of the 21 drivers who raced on Sunday have set fastest lap at least once – the ones who haven’t being Daniel Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen, Pastor Maldonado, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniil Kvyat, Marcus Ericsson and Max Chilton.

Sunday’s race ensured that Hamilton will win more races than anyone else this year. But despite taking his ninth win to team mate Nico Rosberg’s four, it wasn’t until the 39th lap of the race that Hamilton surpassed Rosberg in terms of laps led this season.

Hamilton’s fourth consecutive victory equalled his personal best streak, set earlier this year. If Mercedes continue to finish first and second in the remaining three races, Rosberg now has to win all of them to beat his team mate to the championship.

With Ricciardo now 92 points behind Hamilton and with a maximum of 100 available over the final three races, it is highly likely the next round of the championship will ensure the drivers’ title is won by one of the Mercedes pair.

Thinking about this it could be that there will be a toro rosso situation with the top teams
Hass 2016 will be a second ferrari team which he dosnt seem to mind
If merc buy one of the ailing teams they could have a second team
And there would be room for Alonso to drive a Merc b team

Correct me if I'm wrong but I understand that Toro Rosso must use a different engine to their sister team Red Bull to make them develop different cars. I can't see Ferrari agreeing to run a car with anything other than one of their own engines in it. (even if it would be a better car for it ;))

Don't Toro Rosso use Renault power now......

Edit: predictive text turned Toro into toromolenos :)

There should be no interlectual swopping between torro rosso - renault and red bull - renault on chassis design
The constructer can only enter two cars
The constructers title is won by the chassis maker not engine builder The first part of the teams name being the chassis maker hence mc laren-mercedes or in the case of ferrari just ferrari as it builds both
There is nothing to stop mercedes entering shall we say Cateringham - mercedes provided mercedes bought cateringham
If the top three teams did this thats 6 more cars on the grid
Cost might be a problem but a cap could solve that

Cost might be a problem but a cap could solve that

Which is why we're in the mess now. Small teams were attracted in by the £40m supposed cap, which was never done. Marrusia have done well considering they ran the first season on £40m, and about £45-46m since

Lewis did well today, fully deserves to be world champion this year. Decent race, I like the Austin track. Thought See did well in the end after looking rubbish at the start. Recardo managed to nick a podium again, where were the Williams's? They surely should have been third.

25 secs between Lewis and 3rd place Ricciardo, that's massive for so late in the season. A lot of brave passes and a hell of a lot of wheel banging not to mention the investigations to take place after the race. Roll on next week in Brazil.

It looks as if Bernie might just have gone a little too far
First he admits the financial trouble is his mistake in bad negotiating then his boss has to step in to stop a boycott
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/29888406

Lewis is almost there barring dnf's he has only to come second to nico in the remaining races to win the crown or even 3rd in brazil and 2nd in abu dabi
I see Nico excuse for the lewis pass was he didnt know the switch had a delay on kers where as the button is instantanious and he picked the switch

Facts from the last race
Lewis Hamilton’s 32nd grand prix victory makes him Britain’s most successful F1 driver in terms of race wins. It moves him ahead of Nigel Mansell on the all-time winners list. Hamilton is now level with Fernando Alonso, who had already taken 15 wins when Hamilton made his grand prix debut as Alonso’s team mate in 2007.

Hamilton became only the seventh driver in F1 history to win five races in a row. The others to have done so are Sebastian Vettel, Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark and Nigel Mansell.

It was also his tenth win this year, and Mercedes’ tenth one-two this season. That equals the record set by McLaren in 1988, though that was during a 16-race season. Mercedes have two events left in this 19-race championship to improve on that record. Their 27th victory also puts them level with Benetton.

While Hamilton has won ten times this year, Rosberg has the same number of second places. He’s leading on pole positions, however – this was his ninth this season, guaranteeing Hamilton will not end the year with more. It was the 13th of Rosberg’s career, putting him level with Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, Jacky Ickx, Jacques Villeneuve, Juan Pablo Montoya and Mark Webber.

Vettel took the fastest lap – the 24th of his career, putting him level with Niki Lauda. That ended a ten-race streak in which every fastest lap had been set by a Mercedes-engined car.

Rosberg’s 24-point deficit means he can no longer rely on just beating Hamilton to take the title. If he wins the two remaining races, second places in both will assure Hamilton of the championship.

For the first time this year the pole position time was quicker than it had been the previous year in a case where both sessions ran in dry conditions. Rosberg’s 1’36.067 was 0.271s faster than Vettel’s 2013 pole position time, and just four tenths of a second off the track record set in 2012.

Is there any wonder F1 is declining in audiance
Bernie again still on about V8s Wanting to change the regs again
“They (the race promoters) bought a package and we’re not delivering,” the F1 chief executive, who says the V6s are not loud enough, told British broadcaster Sky a week ago in Austin.
“We need to change the regulations. We’re going to try to get rid of these (V6) engines. They don’t do anything for anybody. They’re not formula one,” Ecclestone insisted.

Don't know why the gnome is harping about V8's, just get the gas guzzling loud as hell V10's back out, then you know you are at an F1 race.

Thanks to Bozzy on YT for this:

Got to give Nico credit for Brazil, thought Lewis was going to get him at the pit stop, if only he'd only done the one lap!
Nico held on well though, no real errors there.

One race to go and as it happens if Lewis has a dnf then the stupid double points wouldn't make a difference now thankfully.

We await the "Duel in the Desert" or call it what you will. No doubt the Mercedes hierarchy will be meeting to discuss "viech driver vill vin ze championship".........ze German of course.
No way Helmut I say, Lewis deserves to win barring a few spanners in the works (or turbo).

Can't get excited over the top 2 this year, although the dices can be interesting. Pleased for FM that he got a home podium yesterday.

Well after years of watching F1, getting up in the early hours to see schmacher wining with no oposition, not going out on a Sunday for fear of someone telling me the result This years done it for me Ive even started to believe lewis spun in the only safe place to make the final a super dooper SHOW now this

I doubt it bernie has some ideas that only Bernie can come up with
The new engines are diluting what F1 is all about and fast gp2 cars isnt
I give up

Bernie 's latest all cars have an engine unfreeze except Mercedes
This guy belives he is F1 and it should be only available to 70 year olds that can afford rollexs
He is trying to make sure when he goes so does F1
Oh and he is trying to gain the accreditation for journalists from the FIA so that anyone that says nasty things about him will be denied access to the pits and drivers
F1 is down the pan and heading for the scrap heap just like wrestling

Some good news, Jules Bianchi is out of his artificial coma and has been transfered to his native France. He is breathing unaided but still unconscious and in a critical state.

Small steps in the right direction. At least he is near his family and friends now, who knows what that could do to aid his recovery. Wish him all the best.

Facts from the last race
Nico Rosberg claimed his fifth victory of the season at Interlagos. This was Rosberg’s eighth career victory, putting him level with the likes of Jacky Ickx and 1967 world champion Denny Hulme.

He now has five wins this year, half as many as team mate Lewis Hamilton. However Rosberg remains in contention for the championship – and not just because of the controversial double points system introduced this year.

With a 17-point deficit to his team mate, Rosberg would be able to win the championship in Abu Dhabi even under last year’s points system. But with twice as many points available for the top ten places at the final round, Rosberg’s chances of winning the title are higher than they would be.

Under the normal points system there would only be six ways Rosberg can take the title, under double points there are 25 different combinations.

Rosberg’s pole position was his tenth of the season, making him the first winner of the FIA’s Pole Position Trophy. His career total is now 14, equalling that of James Hunt, Alberto Ascari, Ronnie Peterson and Rubens Barrichello.

Mercedes had their 11th front row lock-out this year, and their seventh consecutively.

Rosberg has once again led more laps this year than Hamilton – 482 to 455. Nico Hulkenberg led a race for the first time this year, becoming the tenth driver to do so, but Mercedes have led 86.8% of all racing laps so far.

In the race they achieved their 11th one-two, beating the record set by McLaren in 1988, albeit in a season which was three races shorter than this one. They also took their 30th podium finish, one more than the record set by Ferrari in 2004.

Daniel Ricciardo’s retirement brought his 15-race run of consecutive points scores to an end. However he is guaranteed third in the drivers’ championship and Red Bull are now un-catchable in second place in the constructors’ points.

Oops, saw they were being investigated.
So, sent to the back of the grid or start from pit lane as they'll need to change the front wing under Parc ferme?

Change the wing will require re-scruteneering? Nico's car had to be after the floor was changed.

Guess so, wonder if they have any wings that'll pass the deflection test.
They've been pulled for flexing front wings before but this is the first time they've been punished as far as I can remember
Seem to remember that the FIA developed a new test because of Red Bull's front wings.

A couple of years ago at silverstone they got away with the front wing flexing so much the ends were touching the ground.

The precedent being quoted is Hamiltons change of brake disk, however there's reports of teams asking for an explanation of how an illegal to legal wing change come under similar construction size and weight.
Apparently Red Bulls wing has a rubber coated leaf spring to deflect the aero parts under load. The new wing McLaren were testing is a direct copy of red bulls, a result of Red bulls ex aero chief Peter Prodromou going to McLaren, although theres talk that Red Bulls wing extentions above the main wing was rotating around a central pivot to address their issue of lack of top speed.
Adrian Newey complaining other teams all doing it but only Red Bull picked on.

Championship to the wire, controversy, Bernie couldn't have written a better script.
