The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Look we've been through this before.... It's only a matter of time before you cave in. Why not skip all that heartache and just order one now so you can enjoy it ASAP.
TBH I genuinely can't afford it, plus I'd need to upgrade my computer before I consider another high mp camera (y)

You guys are slacking, the Sony thread wasn't on the front page.

Yesterday I shot a combination of 50ZA and 35GM for a birthday party yesterday, full set here

TBH I need to upgrade my computer too but current one is manageable.
I am waiting for the new Mac mini so it gives me some time to build up my funds....

I think part of the "issue" is you shooting uncompressed RAW most of the time. I have noticed it is slower.
Even the lossless compressed RAW from A1 is slightly slower but not as bad as uncompressed RAW.

I think I mentioned it before but I think the amount of mp it's trying to process has more of an impact that the actual file size as I couldn't tell much difference between uncompressed raw and those converted to .DNG where the files are around half the size of uncompressed.

Nice, I'd love a pool
It is a lot of fun but does take a bit of looking after ,we put it in 30 years ago the gas heater costs quite a lot but 5 years ago i put over half a mile of 20mm water pipe on the garage roof and run it through a pump so it comes out the pool through the coils of pipe and back in the pool so to heat it up now costs 10p an hour -this only works when the sun is out but i can get it to 80f :)

Rob.

Brilliant Rob! :D

I can't swim but I do like a bit of floating :D

Did you get one yet Trevor?

I keep looking at that and the 35mm f1.4 but I do think they'd be uncomfortably big for me as I like more compact stuff.

I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with it and I'm sure you'll post your thoughts and some pictures :D

I need to stop watching videos about the R5 & R6 :banghead:

Are you leaving us? :(
I guess it does make a lot of sense for since you adapt some EF glass.

I keep getting tempted but no need really, just got itchy feet.

*I liked it better when Canon's mirrorless cameras were pish :ROFLMAO:, the R5 & R6 look so good.

Having now had it I couldn't live without blackout free shooting ;)

Congrats!
Look forward to seeing some pictures

Thanks. Just ordered a variable ND filter. I’d imagine my R4 shutter at 1/8000 wouldn’t be quick enough with the lens wide open on a sunny day.

And DON’T mention A1..

You'd of course miss some other lenses that you have on Sony. there is no equivalents on canon.
canon doing well is good, it'll keep sony on their toes. Competition in good. but one thing that I never think will happen on Sony is EF glasses working as well as they do on RF.

Having now had it I couldn't live without blackout free shooting ;)

Now just imagine the same but on at 5.6M dots at 0.9x magnification

canon does blackout free shooting too with some trade-offs on IQ and some lag.

I don't need to, its already in your head. its only a matter of time ;)
but A1 can do 1/32000.... just saying....

I've been over that many times on bright sunny days at f1.4. Just last weekend I used 1/32000 for the first time and I still wasn't at ISO 100.

Thanks. Perhaps I’ll just stick with the ND

its nice having 1/32000 but I still would have an ND filter. ND filters allow for greater creative flexibility with your fast lenses.
Plus shooting video at 1/32000 will look bad anyway.
I wouldn't buy an A1 for 1/32000 lol, I was simply pulling Trevor's leg :D

I’ve been finding having the ND mounted means I can quickly switch to video without over exposure. I don’t do it often. But it’s very handy when I’m shooting my favourite subjects. Motorcycles. If I see something special on approach I’ll switch to video to capture sight and sound. A new use for me of my stills camera.

now imagine doing all that in 8K or 4K 120p using the Sony's awesome cinetone profile ;)

I was just thinking about the 28mm f1.8 G rumour. As there hasn't been any mention of it since I wonder if it was a hoax that the rumor guy fell for. I guess only time will tell.

there was some claims that it was a photoshoped image.
tbh I could well believe that. Considering how small they have made 24GM and 35GM, I recon they would make a rather small 28mm f1.4 lens and charge more for the GM badge. 28mm is optically easier to design than 24mm.

WEX have it in stock £949. Oops that’s the 20mm

I read those claims. It's a shame and a mystery I suppose why they haven't done a higher end 28mm than the sometimes criticised f2 as many corners of the internet are screaming for one, but this is the company that wont put a front dial on their RF style cameras despite the internet noise.

I have that one :D I don't use it as much as I'd like but then I can't use anything as much as I'd like as I just don't get the free time.

I do wish they'd redo the 35 and 55mm f1.8's and possibly the 85mm f1.8 too. I have those lenses but I would swap them all for G's of the quality of the 20mm as long as the bulk didn't go up too much.

I am not sure where they get all their feedback and market research from. they do address somethings and sometimes they just completely ignore other glaring issues.
I can only guess things get filtered down to the people that matter and lot of things are missed in translation from the internet/users to the management that make these decisions.

I know that brand ambassadors do have some collective voice because there has been instances of them influencing change. I know likes of some internet reviews like dpreview seem to get heard from time to time. But I imagine the internet is mostly just noise to them. And to some extent I even understand that because if you go with what the internet said A1 should have been a unnecessarily bloated 1Dx style body. canonikon have interestingly gone down this route.

Having done a lot of work with Japanese companies what I can say is that in my humble opinion sheer bloody mindedness and a fear of losing face if changing direction are fair suspects here. If that's the case with front dials and this 28mm I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised :D Things could change if just one manager retires or gets moved. Sometimes it seems to be that simple, one person with an opinion who's unwilling to bend.

Working for a Japanese overlord I must say they do try their absolute best honour their words and promises which is good thing.
At the same time I get the feeling they are really though and tight in their decisions with little flexibility.

I just think 28mm isn't a popular lens these days compared to 24mm and 35mm.
The last premium 28mm I know of is the sigma ART 28mm f1.4. I barely see any in the used market.
And considering A6000 is one of the all time best sellers they probably feel they do not need to change much.

True, constant and repeated criticism from the specialist media, boggers or interested amateurs or even pros doesn't necessarily hit sales figures too much and the fact that I'll never buy a A6xxx or A7c is small beer but as photo gear companies strive to stay alive in a shrinking market they may have to react more to capture sales. I do hope Canon/Nikon really push Sony and I'd certainly not hesitate to jump if one of them offered more of what I want than Sony.

Thats the whole issue, I know my mobile doesn't take great quality pics, the ease of which I can take a photo, apply a slight edit and post inside 5 mins is the reason why sales are down. At least Zeiss tried something different with their latest release, I worry that it will be seen as such a niche product, no-one will try to release a better version.
Id love Sony just to release a camera for photographers and forget the video side, native GPS, in camera focus stacking etc

I wish Sony and Olympus would get together as Olympus have some great features. It would also be nice to have separate raw files that have the in camera adjustments on them too.
